Will a better antenna make a big difference?

Quick question. My PC is hidden away under a desk, so consequentially, the teensy antenna that came with my WiFi card is obscured. It sees only two networks, while my iPod Touch sees about ten. My router also sees about ten.

As far as I know, the supplied antenna is less than 2dbi. Will, say, a 9dbi antenna connected to a 1.5m cable (which will allow me to get it out from under my desk) make any difference? I'd like to connect to the Stellenbosch Community Network, and the signal is relatively strong on my iPod and Router.

I'd prefer not to use my router as it's being used for other stuff. :)

It should. The problem might come where your iPod and router will cause interference with the antenna.

Thanks. Shouldn't be a problem, as the Wireless on my Router is disabled most of the time, and the iPod's is only used every now and then.
