Will HTML5 unseat Flash?

I wouldn't go so far as to call flash a core of the internet, Alastair. DNS is core. Routing protocols are core. HTTP and SMTP could even be called core, but Flash is nothing more than unwanted decay on the fringes of the internet.

Flash VS Plugin FREE Browsers

I would love Flash and Silverlight to disappear. In fact I'd like browsers that could run web apps with the speed of native apps. Never mind that, I think Javascript Vector libraries hold good promise.

Users of mission critical web apps could use a browser that supports everything the app needs, Chrome for instance. This could allow people to dev awesome apps that use all the latest HTML5 and Javascript techniques.

I also agree the a lot of the IE6 problem has been caused by Web Developers or maybe the people who stand to make the money from the websites. But the fact that most websites still support IE6 means the users of IE6 (who don't really care either way) are not forced to upgrade, 'if its not broke, don't fix it'. Touching on my previous statement, I have often spied people using Intranet apps at large companies and shops. Guess what browser these people are using? Don't create apps or websites that are specifically IE6 compatible! Rather shoot yourself in the foot.

I have recently been using an Adobe AIR app and I am not very impressed with its performance. I can easily spot the difference between it and a native app. To me this is unacceptable, I have seen better performance from normal HTML and Javascript in a web browser. Perhaps the app wasn't coded that well? In my view the responsiveness of an application or web page is a huge factor and Flash is not great on that front. I believe HTML5 and Javascript in highly optimized browsers will better Flash.. and not that far into the future either.

Don't forget, Flash can make use of hardware acceleration.

That is actually pretty awesome, could lead to some awesome things too.
