Will I get used to it?

I finally took the plunge.

After years of debating and kicking up a fuss, I finally got my eyes tested and had to get glasses.

With some savings left on our medical aid, I picked out a frame last week and had the lenses made.

Today I collected my new eyes, but it is a very strange feeling.

Everything seems fine while I'm looking in one direction, but it gets disorientating when I move my head around.

Is this something I just have to get used to?

You'll get used to it in a month or so.

I drove with it from the optometrists office back to my office, about 2km, and it was disorientating as hell. I just hope that I won't be a danger on the roads while getting used to it!

You get used to them. if you still feel disorientated after 2 weeks. Go back and tell the optometrist. You might have the wrong prescription.

Took me a while also to get used to my glasses when I got them about 2 years ago. Felt very strange. Now I dont even notice them while I have them on.

Thanks for the replies. I'll give it some time.

The one positive thing is that I now realise how much of the world around me I have been missing :-)

I can now read numberplates from more than 10m away and I see a lot more detail.

With glasses it can take anything from a few days to a couple of weeks. I recently got hard contact lenses. That is entirely something else. First two days I struggled to stand. It took me five weeks of extreme irritation, but now I can see better than I ever imagine.

Mind me asking why you got Hard Contacts instead of the soft lenses?

Wrong or too strong prescription. Exactly what I had years ago, mine were too strong.

Be careful going up or down stairs until you're used to your glasses. It's difficult to gauge the height.

I don't think I am going to wear them too much while walking. I need them for driving and for driving at night since I struggle to see detail further than about 20m, and this gets worse in the dark.

I wear contact lenses most of the time. I find I have the same problem when wearing glasses and driving on the odd occasion.
If you wear the glasses all the time you will get used to it.

Oh, I am blessed with such severe astigmatism that they actually don't make soft lenses that will fit the shape of my eyes. Hard lenses or surgery are the only options for me and I didn't have time for surgery.

Right eye lens is shaped like a rugby ball and still got soft lenses. Maybe ask them again?

Make time, you will regret if you don't!

I fear the day I need to get glasses because I can't see.

I had to get glasses in grade 2 for school because I'm far-sighted - as far as I remember, I didn't complain, think the teachers did or something. Wore them for 2 weeks, hated every single minute, and just stopped wearing them.

Go to the cinema.

When I first got spectacles I was quite astonished by how crisp and detailed everything looked. It was The Matrix also so all that eye candy plus a good film plus being able to see properly... amazing.

I've worn glasses permanently since 1994. When I get a new pair, every 2/3 years, it takes me a couple of days to get use to it.

Should be fine in a few days or so. Had glasses since I was 7 and it always feels weird when I get a new pair. Don't worry about it.
