Will Pay-TV competition launch in May?

I will keep my miltichoice and go for ODM's offering and then will ditch the worst of the 2, or who knows, keep both!
 
I only fanatically watch sports when it's world cup time for cricket/rugby/soccer, and that is often broadcast on SABC. So ODM: hurry up!
 
i really dont mind having both of them. but if they gives me a little moe, then multi-choice can kiss my subscription fee goodbye

Oh no! So if I decide to keep DSTV for certain programmes, such as sport, but want ODM for one of their packages, do I need to have to dishes on my roof? Or have I got the cat by the tail (sorry kitty!)? This is starting to sound like it could be a costly exercise to expand and buy into ODM. :(
 
I sure hope they do...but I still want to keep my DSTV, there are channels I need...but I'd like something new as well...lol was on an IT course with a Multichoice employee...she did not know about the impending competition, I had to tell her about it!

Govender said that ODM's market research suggests that many Multichoice subscribers will look at purchasing an ODM decoder and service to complement DStv and gain access to channels that are not available from the Multichoice service.

"There are roughly 10.5 million television households in South Africa. Multichoice has chewed up about two million of those - so there are about eight million that cannot afford pay-TV at the moment.

"In our view, our core target market is about three million of those eight million," he said.
"Our main mission is to take pay-TV to the middle income group, who haven't been able to access multi-channel environments before," added Govender.

So it seems they are not really interested in pleasing all the existing DSTV subscribers, and my suspicion was right that they are targeting the rest of us who DONT have DSTV at the moment......

ODM ftw!!
 
While I'm not advocating staying with monochoice, there are pros and cons with ODM as I see it:

Cons:
1. DSTV has significantly brought up their airing dates of overseas content, namely TV series, movies etc.
ODM is planning on showing content later than DSTV, but before it hits the FTA channels like SABC/ETV

2. Existing DSTV dish + decoder
Need to buy a new ODM decoder and re-align your dish, or purchase a 2nd dish to watch both DSTV and ODM

3. DSTV has HD and PVR
ODM has no HD (as far as I'm aware) and PVR functionality will only be released in approximately 12 months after launch

Pros:
4. While I don't personally watch a lot of sport, a lot of the DSTV subscribers only have DSTV for the sport
ODM is planning on airing alternative sports.

5. DSTV have various packages, but unless you take the premium package which includes everything, you actually get pretty screwed.
ODM is planning on letting you select the channels you want (supposedly)

6. DSTV's costs are ridiculous as they're cross subsidizing without giving decent options for channel selection
As per point 5, ODM are going to (supposedly) charge per channel/let you select channels, bringing the cost way down.


While the above list is not comprehensive, I think people are going to have to think long and hard in deciding which pay TV operator to use and unfortunately, SA has a legacy of lots of hype and under delivery.
I hope for ODMs sake as well as the masses of people out there currently unable to afford monochoice's outrageous pricing that they pull it off.
 
Being able to select and only pay for the channels you would actually watch would be awesome, as long as their prices weren't too ridiculous.

I hope you're prepared to be faced with the worst call centre ever.

As for DStv - I couldn't care less about sport, I only have it to watch some of the latest shows (Grey's, Fringe, Flash Forward), and only because it hasn't been released on DVD.
