Will Pay-TV competition launch in May?

No sport?! OMW! My life will fall apart without my dose of golf, rugby and cricket!

No wait, hang on...
According to the current online Subscriber Information Form new subscribers will have the following choice of content: Movies, Series, Documentary, Children, Music, Religion, News, Sport and Local Content.
Did you guys miss that paragraph?

On the other hand....
One of the biggest questions which has been circulating around the launch of ODM is the possibility of sports broadcasting. Govender however told The Times that he does not believe a lack of sports coverage will hurt ODM adding that "we are not entirely a sports-mad country".
I think maybe this bit might be talking about LIVE sports coverage. Makes me wonder if they'll broadcast delayed games like SABC. They should probably be more clear, though...

Anyways it IS possible to provide entertainment without sports. Genuine. :)

Hahaha.. riiight

Yeah, At last some SPORT FREE channels. Always P****S me of when they show sport during normal program slots.

I will switch very fast. Gonna cancel DSTV anyhow after they recent increase.

Launch in May? Does anyone even care anymore? Pay TV competition has been yet another ICASA fail, after much fanfare and months of council bruhaha, three years later, there's still an awesome amount of nothing...

Juice

Phone right now!! I'm waiting patiently in anticipation for the competition to show us what they have. I'm certainly not missing anything without DSTV, so I'm in no hurry.

Bwhahahahahahahahaha, what an idiotic statement to make. We are flipin sport crazy. I wonder how many people would cancel with multichoice should they drop supersport, i reckon 60% of their client base would drop them if not more.

DSTV is useless to me with no sport.

DSTV has ipl, english premier league, SUper 14 almost every international cricket tour, formula 1.

I think I will stay with DSTV until I am satisfied the ODM product can at best match DSTV.

they said they would have things like kick boxing etc... I think when people here are wanting sport channels they generally mean rugby, soccer, cricket, F1 etc- the more mainstream sports

I dont care about sport, so depending on the channels Ill definitely go over to ODM

Should request a poll for those who get pay TV for sport and those who don't want to watch sport on their pay TV.

Just to see :-)

I think I will stick to multichoice for now until ODM can prove that they can really compete. I remember the same hype with Neotel and it turned out to be a semi disaster in my eyes.

- Govender however told The Times that he does not believe a lack of sports coverage will hurt ODM adding that "we are not entirely a sports-mad country". - BIG FAIL!!!!!

Just add the soccer, rugby and F1 to the deal..and you'll have the monopoly..
Screw all the other crap on TV..I'll pay R200 per month, just to have the rugby!

I think most people are missing the point, or should I say the 'target market' that ODM is aiming for.

If you have DSTV at the moment, chances are you can afford it. (and because you had no choice) and you probably wont change to ODM. But I dont think ODM is looking at grabbing any of the current 1,5 million DSTV subscribers, but rather to get the rest of us who struggle with SABC and Etv only.

If you cant live without sport, or should I say 'live feed' sport, then by all means stay with MC. Surely the R500/month is by now part of your monthly overheads.

I guess you should have a dual LNB then ?

nope, the article is misleading. A dish installed for DSTV will need to turned to face the ODM satellite, making DSTV reception impossible.

If you want to use both DSTV and ODM, you will need two dishes. That or you will need to buy a motorised dish.

That is actually a really good idea, would love to see the outcome.

RPM poll dude please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If all the people with DSTV that don't watch sport move over to ODM then DSTV will be under pressure to increase prices as it is the cost of broadcasting live sport that is expensive for them as opposed to 5 year old reruns of series and movies. This cost is currently being subsidized by the large subscriber base of people who dont watch sport.

In 2007 MC had million subscribers. They aired live sport then, so I think the new 500 000 members is money in the pocket for them.

I am sure they are doing ok'ish with the R750million in MONTHLY revenue generated...........
