CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape requested a pilot project to test the viability of so-called plastic roads.

The technology uses recycled plastic to replace the component bitumen in road construction, which is derived from crude oil.

These roads have already been rolled out in India and parts of Europe.

However, the DA's motion was set aside in the provincial legislature last week.

Well of it costs less than traditional roads why not?

They already use this, it's called PMB or polymer modified bitumen. Basically plastic particles are blended in a high shear mill with bitumen. It improves the temperature resistance and flexibility of the standard Bitumen. A lot of new roads are already using this, especially in the Cape and Gauteng area. We also use Rubber particles ( from recycled tires mainly) extensively in SA road projects. Infact we are one of the world leaders when it comes to this.

One evening you will enjoy your ride home (given it can withstand the heat ) .Next morning you will wake up to no road and some “entrepreneur” selling brand new plastic items that he made from plastic that he found “laying around”.

Given this is South Africa it won’t work , I am willing to make a bet roads will get stolen and melted down

They steal Fiber to make baskets for f*#k sake what will stop them from stealing roads to make items

They do??
Never heard of Fibre being stolen.

I doubt that, I don't see any entrepreneurs fighting over the plastics that are lying around everywhere.

This is actually one of the better uses for recycled plastic IMO.

I would actually love it if there was a demand for plastic by criminals, it would mean that there would be no plastic litter.

Will the road light up like a firework snake whenever someone burns tyres on it or can they just melt a few bottles to fix the damage?

If it works, lasts longer as they claim and is faster to build and gets plastic bags out of our environment and locks them up in infrastructure that is useful then why the hell not.

Can the DA implement this in the Metro's though without having to ask for permission to rolls this out. If so, then just start doing it in the DA metro's and give the ANC the finger.

It's a little misleading to call them plastic roads... the plastic is used as an additive/replacement for bitumen (asphalt or the black sticky glue that holds roads together). The road is still made from mostly "aggregate particles"

It's already pretty standard practise so I don't see why not...
