Basically what I wanna know is this...
In GoW when I play a ranked match I suck!...why you ask?...beacuase of the latency!...the .5 sec delay gives you no chance against players overseas who literally have none...
I thought it was my skills until I joined a SA hosted game and realised that I play pretty well its just my latency that screws me over...what I wanna know is realistically can it get better?
I mean fair enough our speed can increase and our bandwith usage allowance can increase but that doesnt mean our latency will ever decrease does it?
Is it telkoms fault that our latency is crappy?...or is it just one of those things in the world we can't change?

Well for one, if you want to play international games, you MUST use an unshaped account, your latency will drop from ~400-500ms to 200-250ms, which in the word of GoW is a lifetime.

Just buy a Gb prepaid from someone like WebAfrica and switch whenever you need it. Hopefully *sigh* the new ADSL regs stipulate that shaping is illegal and we won't have to pay extra when some ****wit gets off their *** and does some work to enforce the regulations.

he already has unshaped, Its ones of those things we cant change really but it also depends on the netcode of the game, for example call of duty 3 plays flawlessly even with a shaped account on 384k line and thats with 24 players

You could try to browse for local hosts but most of the time I host ranked Assasination mode matches coz its simple for locals to find it, unlike Warzone or Execution which are harder coz they are the most common modes around.

bondizzo as far as I know COD3 is hosed by a server not a fello xbox live player...it seems like a better option compared to the host guest thing GoW does...

yes I have an unshaped account...when we 'officially' get xbox live in SA does anyone know if the system would at least choose from a pool of local players? or will it be just as bad?

It's so slow because we dont have a XBOX server here is SA , we all have to connect to UK.

I dont know exactly how it works since some local games are faster ??
But defenitely the servers prob when playing someone international.

What i am the maddest about is that when i play japnese i cannot hear their voices ..it just gets dropped and you can see them speaking since that speaker lights up.. shimatta !

I think you may be mistaken there Tenshi...

The fact that the traffic has to go through a server in ranked matches does add some overheard but not enough for the problem. I think it is purely down to distance and our generally small pipe to the world.

another misconception, I can hear voices of ppl from all around the world maybe you not on adsl ? bad/good news guys a local South African server wont really help much apart from downloads cause to play international you still have to send data out of the country so that will stay the same

thats what I was afraid of....what Im saying is though...

Does it make sense to have a server say at point C where the game is hosted then regardless of where points A and B are the chances are the distance will be shorter than A to B...

So say XBOX Live SA had games server between us and US, between us and Europe, between us and Far East and between us and AUS...
Now u as a South African makes a decision when playing the game to pick one and then essentially the distance is cut in half....

So instead of the info going from you to the host(UK + 12000 miles) then UK dude responds and it travels back....now u can speak to server so he sends info 6000 miles to server and server sends it back to him and to you too simultaneously....therfor 6000 miles back and essentially cutting the time in half...

Does that make sense to anyone?...is it even possible? and more importantly is it LIKELY?

Yeah it makes perfect sense.

Is it theoretically possible? Yeah...

Is it likely? Hell no....

Where about would you put the server between us and the US?

If M$ put a server in SA which weights local users higher then most of our ranking problems will be gone... However due to the current laws of physics we are never going to get fantastic times to the States. The distance is just to vast.

Hey guys, I just got an xbox and I want to connect in xbox live, how do I do it? please I need your help.

Congratulations, in a single post you've managed to violate three rules (or etiquettes if you like) for internet forums.

1. You resurrected an old post
2. You went off-topic
3. You didn't use the search function

Actually light can travel around the earth 8 times in a sec. It just that electric signals & radio waves don't travel that quick. ;)

Since the thread went off topic anyway....... :D

Interestingly the theoretical "best" latency you'd be able to get between New York and Pretoria would be a little less than 100ms, even at the speed of light. Which we will NEVER see in real life.

That's off course if my maths haven't failed me completely...... which it has before.

Is that for a single trip or round trip though? ;)

Just to give the OP an answer, the only way to get the best latency is to move over to where you want to play your games. Either the States or European countries. Latency also occurs at the interchange points. ie say for 3G, from your modem to the tower, then to the ISP, then to the intercontinental cable, etc. And that is a one way trip. Sorry about the incorrect terms used.
