I am lending an iBurst modem for testing and I find a signal from a tower that is 12km away (according to utTracer) with a yagi antenna. Average signal strenght is -82dB. The place I am lending the iBurst modem from is very slow in giving me the login details of the modem so that I can test the actual connection, thats why I need your comment on the following questions relating to my situation:

What would the possible connection quality be?
Will upload be affected very badly because of the distance?
Will skype work fine?

Hi FacELesS

An ideal signal strength would be around the 60-70’s. A signal strength of 80 is average, however you will still be able to make use of basic internet applications like browsing the internet and sending and receiving emails.

Due to the distance that you are from the tower your latency could be higher than normal and this will adversely affect applications like Skype and Games that requires a low latency. However, you could set your MTU to a lower value which might help, i.e. < 1324. In general the iBurst network is not suited to applications like Skype although iBurst punts VoIP, it is most probably the worst connection to try and use VoIP. I have tested the connection throughput at various ranges from as little as 50 m upto 1.5 Km from towers, all with directional antennas to prevent signal hopping and the results are very poor. The best option would be to use LR VoIP should you want to make use of VoIP technology as it delivers a far better connection and is more cost effective than Skype.

What you would need to do is look at the actual load on the tower during office hours. Also, it is best to check the signal when there is a load placed on the connection, i.e. when you are downloading a large file.

Telnet into your UTD and then download a large file, then paste the results here so we can advise.

How to:
Use of the information below is at your own discretion… we cannot be liable for damages caused by misusing the information provided.

1. Connect the UTD via Ethernet cable.
2. Set the Ethernet IP address to 192.168.250.* (not 10)
3. Open a telnet application like telnet-bsd or putty or open a command window and type "telnet 192.168.250.10 1234"
4. The default IP for the UTD should be: 192.168.250.10 port 1234
5. Open the connection
6. Type "rfScan debug 2"
7. The first line displayed will be the info you require. The number after the Bscc is your base station number, then signal strength in dB, then distance to you and then base station load. I.e.: 1 Bscc 9 Cost –80 Distance 22 Load 3
8. Right click and select all press enter and copy the info to a text file.
8. Once you are done type "rfScan debug 0"
9. Close the connection

Also, test your VoIP throughput with this link; http://myvoipspeed.visualware.com/vr/index.html.

Heed the advice of Mr H below! - Do not sign a contract or a debit order, should you still wish to make use of iBurst make use of an intermediary like Trade Page.

Regards

Michael

What would the possible connection quality be? - Average to poor
Will upload be affected very badly because of the distance? - Yes, you will not achieve a throughput nearing 1Mbps
Will skype work fine? - Yes, poorly with broken sound

First, if you can't get ADSL then I guess you don't have many options besides wireless, but if you can get ADSL then rather go that route.

12km is quite a distance so if you can't get a steady speed of no less than 600kbps up forget it as sooner or later you will not be happy.
Read some of the other threads in this forum about the accounts and other useless departments before you commit to getting iburst.

If you decide to go with iburst then DO NOT take out a contract, rather do it month to month as that will give you the option to drop iburst if your signal goes bad.

I don't use skype so I'll leave it to someone else to reply to that question.

I would very strongly advise against ibust. In your case the 12km will bite you. ibust oversubscribe their towers and the first people to get dropped are the people far away from the tower. It is a part of the wireless technology. As a tower gets congested the footprint shrinks. Where you can now get a signal 3 months from now you might not. If you are happy to only surf after hours then it might not be a big concern to you.

If you do decide to go the ibust way set up SMS notification on your bank account. I am not kidding. They love to double debit you for a month then claim that you owe them money and whatever. If they do double debit you phone the bank and reverse the second debit. You can do that up to 3 days from the debit. Then phone the dreaded accounts department and tell them what is going on.

Lastly DO NOT get a 24 month contract. Ever. You will most likely want out in the next 6 months.

Anyway, other than that, good luck.

Cost of -80db does'nt guarantee connection. We've done a test with a yagi over 14km from the tower, virtually line of sight, costing of less than 80, no connection though. So don't just rely on the costing, you need to also do a speed test (which means you need the username and password for the device).
