I really do not trust my carrier to store my biometric data securely. This will just increase identity fraud, and my biometric data will eventually become public as there will be a data breach. I don't trust Vodacom, mtn, cell c, Telkom or our Government
 
This will not stop the fraud, it will just make it more dangerous for people when their SIM is stolen. They may now also literally loose a finger too. In addition to this, who controls the security of the providers storage database that contains the personal information? This will in effect throw POPIA under the bus too.

In addition to the above, may SIM's are used in non personal devices, such as card swipe machines, traffic controllers, ATM's, Modems, etc. How on earth is this going to be regulated? I see a massive FAIL here and an opportunity for criminals to steal a lot more.
 
Wont work. As long as there are people controlling the procedure and entering data, it wont be stopped.
 
Q. Why do thieves SIM SWAP?
A. So thieves can access banking (or other account) via SMS 2FA.

Solution: Don't use SMS for 2FA.

Good banks use their Banking App for 2FA.

There is another reason for RICA, so NSA can track you (which is why ICASA wants biometric ID)
 
Explain to me again in simple terms how biometric would stop a rogue shop assistant / syndicate performing a sim swap?
 
This will just leave another gap in the security system for the fraudsters to commit some more serious ID theft and ID fraud!It would also be a waste of money. People will need extra training in using said systems to assist clients.
I can go on and on...
On top it will all end up with the consumer forking out the money to foot the bill.

Came here to say this. The only thing that will stop SIM swap fraud would be to convince as many people as possible to stop using their phone number to secure important online accounts so criminals are no longer incentivised.
 
They are collecting your Biometric data for their database it has nothing to do with the scanning of and encoding of a duplication sim.

Surely, eSIM and doing away with the need for physical SIMS is the way to go. SIM swap should be a thing of the past

eSIM just swaps a physical SIM for a protected profile package, which the LPA downloads and the eSIM unlocks. The same process with the same weaknesses will be used by the MNO.
