Will this Setup work?

I have just learned about putting my Netgear DG834GT in "modem only" mode. I have a pc that connects via cable to the device and a latptop that connects via wifi. I ONLY use my laptop for local downloads and the pc for international surfing. Can I create a new dial up connection with my international Afrihost account on the desktop pc and another dial up connection for my local account on my laptop. Will both work at the same time?
Is it safe?

Well I have my modem set up for international and when I want to do some local downloading then I use my local only account via a separate PPPoE connection from the machine I'm using. This way all the other machines in the house use international and the one I'm on uses local.

Yes. What you are talking about is bridged mode aka PPPOE passthrough. In essence, you modem doesn't dial or create any PPPOE connections on its own. However, it will allow external devices (like your PC and laptop) to dial their own PPPOE connections. So you PC can be set up to dial your Afrihost account, and your laptop can be set to dial your local-only account. Your PC will only consume bandwidth from your Afrihost account, and your laptop will only consume bandwidth from your local-only account. It is completely safe. However, just remember that the 2 connections still share the actual physical telkom line. So on a 4mbps line, the 4mbps will be shared between the 2 accounts, and each account will have an effect on the speed of the other account, while they are both in use.

Set up your modem/router with your international account details under the PPPoE section. On the machines you want to have run a local account PPPoE session create a PPPoE connection, input the local account details and then when you need it activate it. Under windows XP the setup wizard is in "Start->Settings->Network Connections", in Win7/Vista it's in the network centre.

ok under network connections I can "create a new connection" but there's no option to create PPPOE connection?

oh BTW if I put my router in "modem only" mode I cannot enter details into the router anymore- that option dissapears

Don't set your router as "modem only", keep it set to the one you had where the PPPoE options were available.

Which OS are you running? Windows XP I presume.

yes XP..If I leave it as the old settings when I try to dial the created connection it says "connecting to Wan miniport) it dials and then gives the error "no response from host computer"

Windows won't tell you that it is a PPPOE connection while you are creating it (AFAIK), but once it is created it WILL be a PPPOE connection.

When it says connecting to WAN miniport, then it is definitely a PPPOE connection. If it says no response from host computer, then either your modem doesn't have bridged mode / PPPOE passthrough / modem-only enabled, or you are not connected to the network correctly. You must first be connected to your LAN/WLAN correctly, then you dial the PPPOE connection, and you modem will "listen" for PPPOE traffic. That my understanding of how it works.

i have a dg834g and mine does not work even though i have passthrough enabled. it will except only one connection at a time. my so called junk mega105 at work however has no problems with this.
