The Australian ISP, Buzz Broadband, have come out saying that WiMax is a ‘disaster’. But their supplier, Airspan, have defended WiMax and hit back calling the ISP cheap.

This is simply another lesson in the real complexity of making broadband work properly. It is not enough to have a functional wireless air interface (as Airspan's equipment almost certainly offers). Much of the engineering needs to be done at the back end, and you cannot skimp on backhaul bandwidth (mobile operators please note).

The reference to VoIP is also a reminder that WiMAX is not a panacea. It is optimum for a mix of IP-based services, and does have the QoS to support voice (if there is enough bandwidth) but is actually relatively inefficient for voice when compared to 3G standards such as CDMA2000 or W-CDMA (though not as hopeless as iBurst).
