Surely Telkom must be considering a speed upgrade at some point? Been using it for the past year and its a great service but 512k is starting to get a bit long in the tooth. Anyone have any information?

i asked the same question over and over and over and over and over again

screamer is offering 1meg

The issue isn't the speed - it has to do with how they provision their capacity. Technically they can run a lot higher than 1mb but that would consume too much of their capacity.

Now I guess that you can argue that they should just allow you to pay for the additional speed but I think this would affect their over-sell i.e. they assume that not everyone is connecting at the same time. For example: If they can handle 10x512kb simultaneous connections they may sell 100x512kb connections and assume that not all 100 people will try to connect and furthermore the technology can probably handle a degree of queuing (just a guess). Now it is my suspicision they would make less money (and serve fewer people) by increasing the bandwidth, which would reduce the over-sell ratio.

Would be good to get some industry feedback on this point.

You are quite correct Wow4life

The issue with provisioning speed is not a restriction on the WiMAX comms because we are able to, and often do when specifically requested, provision our clients with up to true 4Mg speeds.
The real issue is that if we provisioned every one of our clients with a 4 Mg speed and they all logged in at the same time our backhaul (transmission) links would be squeezed and everyone would experience a degradation.

So we monitor the clients usage and those with larger bandwidth packages and a lot of activity get provisioned with slightly higher speeds whereas the one who are on smaller packages but who require lower latency get a standard 512 pipe unless they specifically request a bigger one.

So in essence we are stuck on 512k

@howzit when you coming to cape town ?
