Hmm, Win10 was upgraded from Win7 Pro years ago, activated and ran fine up until today... wtf?

I replaced my motherboard, without thinking, and now I am faced with the same issue. Not having much luck figuring out how to make it work again.

Call MS Support. Did the same thing except my board died and it was tied to a pro key. They just gave me a new code via telephone.

Would also call MS Support and see what they say.

On hold at the moment...

Have a registered ms account and was also part of their insider program for yonks, they should be able to pick this up.

My notebook came with Win 7, upgraded to 8/8.1 and then did the gratis update to 10. Replaced the drive with SSD, did a clean install and no luck. Retried the Win 7 upgrade path, doesn't even recognise the OEM key, tried a retail key and no luck. Gave up on it... don't have any explanation.

My other notebook came with 8.1 Pro, but it upgraded to Win 10 Home. I have no issue with this, but at least the notebook recognises the license.

I did, and gave up after exactly 30 minutes of being on hold.

Windows 10 Pro goes Home as Microsoft fires up downgrade server
It's all so unProfessional

Microsoft's activation servers appear to be on the blink this morning – some Windows 10 users woke up to find their Pro systems have, er, gone Home.

Twitter user Matt Wadley was one of the first out of the gate, complaining that following an update to the freshly released Insider build of next year's Windows, his machine now thought it had a Windows 10 Home licence.

While build 18277, which appeared yesterday, contains lots of goodies including improvements to Focus Assist to stop notifications bothering customers using apps in fullscreen mode, improvements to High-DPI and an intriguing setting to allow users to manage camera and mic settings in Application Guard for Edge, it did not mention anything about borking the machine's licence.

To the relief of the bruised Insider team (but no one else), it soon became apparent that the issue is not just isolated to those brave souls trying out preview code, but over many versions of Windows 10.

The vast majority of issues reported so far appear to be from users who upgraded from a previous version.

However, some users are also reporting issues with fresh installs.

According to those able to get hold of Microsoft's call centres, the advice is to wait a while and the problem should fix itself, indicating something has gone awry on the licensing servers, and engineers are currently scrambling to fix it.

The Register contacted Microsoft to learn more, and we will update if there is a response.

In the meantime, the problem does not look to be too widespread, which will be small comfort to affected users who, er, might want to join a domain, set up Hyper-V or all of the other goodies found in Windows 10 Pro. ®

Updated to add
While there remains no official statement from Microsoft on the problem, users have reported that the hardworking support operatives of the Windows giant have warned that there is indeed a "temporary issue" with its activation servers related to the Pro edition.

Affected customers are advised to sit tight and wait for a fix. An estimate for when that might be? Anywhere from one to two days. Oh dear.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 activation system is broken, a fix is coming

The users are reporting that Microsoft has downgraded their Windows 10 Pro license to Windows 10 Home without any warning this morning.

There appears to be a critical problem with Windows 10 activation system as many users are encountering an issue that causes activation problems on their machines.

The growing number of reports point to a server-side bug with Microsoft’s activation system.

According to the users, the reactivation doesn’t seem to work and Microsoft’s bug would downgrade Windows 10 Pro to Home in some cases.

“All of a sudden after years of having this key which was from windows 8 pro then migrated to windows 10 for free, I got a notification saying my key is Windows 10 home version and that I need to install it,” a user explains on Reddit.

“I am having the same problem. It’s even gone as far as my digital entitlement is gone from my Microsoft account and I have a Windows 10 home key now. Windows is deactivated because I went from Windows 10 Pro to home and it doesn’t match anymore. Where did my digital license go though.. I hope it comes back,” another user posted.

Several users have also documented the problem on Twitter and there is no workaround available at the moment but Microsoft is actively investigating the reports.

A fix is coming

Microsoft support team says that the company is investigating the reports and a fix is expected to arrive soon. If you’ll contact Microsoft’s chat or call there, the agent will ask you to wait until a fix is deployed.

Microsoft support team reportedly told many users to wait as this is a known issue which is being experienced in several countries including the United States.

The number of users who are reporting the issue is growing and Microsoft’s support team is trying to help the customers but no workaround appears to be working.

“Microsoft has just released an Emerging issue announcement about current activation issue related to Pro edition recently. This happens in Japan, Korea, American and many other countries. I am very sorry to inform you that there is a temporary issue with Microsoft’s activation server at the moment and some customers might experience this issue where Windows is displayed as not activated,” Microsoft’s support agent explains.

“Our engineers are working tirelessly to resolve this issue and it is expected to be corrected within one to two business days,” the agent responded, according to a post on Microsoft answers forum.

In some cases, the valid license of Windows 10 Pro has been downgraded to Windows 10 Home but at the moment this is an isolated behaviour.

It’s a bug experienced on Microsoft’s activation servers and the software giant is already working on a solution. It’s likely that everything will return to normal in just a few hours or it may take several hours in some regions.

Microsoft hasn’t offered any working to address activation issues with Windows 10. For now, you will have to wait until the fix is deployed.

Mine is licensed again. Was getting a bit annoyed, thinking that my key was somehow blacklisted as it said I don't have a genuine copy.

Had the same issue yesterday. I had to format, reinstall Windows 8, then 8.1 and then 10. Such a long procedure that kept me up all night.
