WIN7 and Apple TV

When one has a Mac one usually stream media to your TV via a nifty liitle box called " Apple TV"

Only I don't have s Mac

The ATV is an independent device. You don't need to have a computer, Mac or otherwise. One thing that you can do with a Mac is send Airplay content. iTunes also runs on Windows so if you want to connect to this way (for restoring, upgrading firmware, etc) you wouldn't have an issue.

What do you want to do with the Apple TV?

The Apple TV isn't useful if you want to play movies/series that you have downloaded onto a PC/media server, due to copyright reasons.

If your TV supports DLNA, then just host a DLNA server on your PC.

So I would be better of using something else to dtream media to a TV from a WIN7 box, if I underdtand correctly

I think the OP is referring to Home Sharing which will work equally well with a Mac or PC running iTunes as that's all that is required.

However it will ONLY play content that actually plays in iTunes...so if you can't add it to iTunes you can't use an Apple TV.

If you have a win7 box with media, install Plex Media Server on it to share your media. Then, depending on what ATV version you have, you can either JB and install Plex on it or if you have the ATV3, use the trailers app workaround to stream content to the ATV3. I've done this with my ATV3 and stream my media with no issues.

That Plex Trailer workaround for the ATV is quite some effort, especially if you don't know that much about computers - but I have to admit it is one awesome trick that they've done with that PlexConnect!

ATV2 + jailbreak + XBMC = media player awesomeness. Stream from Windows 7 no problem.

ATV3 not so much...

Went do you say almost dude?

Aside from setting up your plex server and creating a Roku account, it is pretty much plug and play.

Just curious.

I have the occasional issue with my Roku that it will just stop playing the video (from Plex). I then have to stop it and press play again and then it carries on. Sometimes happens multiple times in one video. Happens rarely though but annoying when it does.

Also the set up is a bit of a headache for us Saffers having to use a VPN and all to create the accounts.

So, "almost" describes it pretty well for me :)

Okay, I get what you mean. That is a bit annoying.
I have 4 Roku's and they can all stream without issue - and simultaneously.
What spec is your Plex server. Maybe it chokes a bit? Or network has issues somewhere?
My plex server is a quad Xeon 3.2Ghz. Prior to this I used a microserver and it used to choke from time to time.

I am really keen to Rey help you diagnose this so you have a seamless experience like I do. We can take it to PM if you keen.

On the Unotelly side. That is a once off setup so you should be sorted after initial setup?

It actually happens only with direct streams and I believe it has to do with the media format. I'm contemplating remuxing a lot of my content so that everything direct plays. This would also allow me to playback most stuff without transcoding on the Chromecast too.

I'm using a dual core Pentium 2.8Ghz (el cheapo). It manages transcoding barely but it doesn't stutter even at 1080p, it's just taking forever to do this index files. I've been creating these index files on and off for about 2 or 3 weeks now. I'm at 'T' now on 6TB of series. Still have movies to do :( I would kill for an i7 right now.
