I brought my Dell home this weekend as I was battling with my home PC....

The DELL usually stays on my office table and is not moved...

On returning it to work today and booting, W7 Pro, took for ever to load and then the screen froze then worked then crashed to BOD.

I rebooted in safe mode, tried a restoration point..... same problem....

Then on booting the DELL app that self tests came up and told me that me HD is missing....

WTF? SO the entire morning, sometimes I can boot into W7 (after a long wait) then a without doing anything BOD....

IS this a loose connection problem?

Any suggestions? THe HDD sounds allright, no clicks or abnormal noise....

Cannot do a repair using the install DVd....

Using Puppy, and I can see the drive, so it's not damaged.....

However in Puppy I get the following warning which alludes to a damaged filesystem.....

How can I repair this, if I cannot boot into W7?

actually leaning more towards a virus...... that screwed with my mbr...

Just remembered that there was a chap at the party, who liked my music and wanted to copy/er backup some of the songs.,...... the next day when I rebooted the laptop, the issue began..... I saw the exact same error codes on another site and the guy was struck down by a virus... so now I am trying to find a 64bit W7 recovery .iso I cannot creaTE one from my system as it is down .... and my Dell came with that partition where W7 was preloaded........ getting frustrating as I have lost an entire day at work.....

*BSOD (Sorry, I just had to)

Dont really have much advice other than using a Live distro to take a number of approaches to either identify and/or correct your issue :)

Blerrie Spelling Nazi's...... Grrr, in my hour of frustration nogal.... :D

On round 2 of mounting via Puppy linux, the drive failed to show up..... So I am busy formatting a spare and going to try a fresh install in the morning.......

You should probably give up with this drive. It has either problem of reading firmware code from service area, or some intermittent PCB fault. Remove PCB and clean contacts using pencil eraser on antistatic surface, as it can be also caused by poor contacts.

No!No! No!

Removed the drive, bitch slapped it, blew some air, reseated it and managed to boot in on Safe Mode with network....
Busy backing up some work files...... And busy downloading recovery disc on another machine..... This HDD must be fine....i did get an error when booting into safety mode that there was an error with trying to set the machine back to a restore point.....

So going to stick it out in safe mode, copy more important data onto an external drive and then use the recovery disc in the morning...
If all else fails, i shall be doing a fresh install....

Thinking along this line also now.....

Boot from Windows disk, select repair>cmd prompt, enter:
BootRec.exe /fixmbr

you can also substitue the /fixmbr with thes commands:

BootRec.exe /FixBoot. Writes a boot sector onto the system partition to start Windows

BootRec.exe/ScanOs. Scans all disks for Windows installations and displays them to you.

BootRec.exe /RebuildBcd. Scans all disks for Windows installations and prompts you to pick the ones you want to add to the BCD.

Ok! For those of you who might be interested....

I did a complete format and reinstall....

Download Dell Diagnostic Tools , Ran it and got the following message, "Critical Error, HardDrive Failure, replace Hard Drive..."

Typical on an Easter Long Weekend...

Anyone recommend a place in CPT where I can source a new HDD for my Dell Vostro 3750?

Thanks for all the suggestions...

If you need it ASAP, Matrix Warehouse.

You looking at 1TB for R1100 and R800 for 500GB.

But there are many other options online.

Ok, just realised you live in Namibia, Im not sure how you would be able to get it locally.

Just picked up a 1TB from Chaos COmputers for R1099......

If you're going SSD instead, then it'll cost a bit more. But you'll never regret a switch to SSD.

I have the 250GB SSD Samsung newly installed in my tower at home....keep waking up in the morning to MBR 1 Errors..... in panic mode, I found a lot of info about how super sensitive they are to power fluctuations..... even with an UPS......Even though they are faster and more silent, for the price, I will stick with the good old mechanical drive...

Thnx

Considering it is a laptop so there should always be a battery attached, I do not see a problem with it.
