Windows 10 Anniversary Update Hides Partitions After Install

This is serious. This is bad! Some users have reported that the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is hiding their partitions after installation, with these partitions disappearing from File Explorer.

And instead, all show up as RAW in Disk Management.

Which is enough to make most people believe that their data has been removed without the possibility of recovering — that, of course, is not true, as no files are lost. As long as users do not try to recover anything with third-party software.

As that can lead to a complete breakdown of partitions and removal of data.

But this about as problematic an issue discovered in Windows 10, with Microsoft confirming that this is a bug that has been discovered in the install system.

This is what the company says:

“Microsoft is aware of this issue and is working on a solution to be released through Windows Update. Any data you have stored on the affected partition is still there. We recommend that you not try to recover or otherwise write data to the affected partition, nor should you format the partition.”

Redmond has also explained that a patch will be released for this, and made available to users.

However, people that do not want to wait for it can always downgrade to their previous version of Windows, which will then restore partitions just as they were created before, with all files becoming available once again.

The software titan has also revealed that so far it has only received a small number of reports pointing to this bug, but at the end of the day the risk of data loss for inexperienced users remains very high.

This is serious. This is bad!

I have suffered this too on my external hard drive. Suddenly windows can't access it. Surely this is a critical oversight and flaw in the update? I would say it isn't a "small number of users" - it's huge

Very unhappy about this

People still upgrading Windows? Clean install ftw!

True. That normally works the best. Amazingly, I upgraded from 8.1 to 10 and had no issues. I did the big update from earlier in the year and then did the Anniversary update the other day and everything worked 100%. Windows 10 has been my best upgrade experience when compared to any version of Windows.

you have to run the upgrade once to register the hardware profile for the win 10 free license, the only exclusion for this is if you buy the full package.

They actually changed this with the later versions of the Win10 installer. It allowed you to do a clean install of Win10 with your previous version product key and it activated that. I used this method to reserve my key without damaging my current install.

That's actually pretty cool
