Anyone got this working?
Have not tried it. .....
Any reason why one needs to use the App?
Yes.

No.
1. Launch Connect app on miracast-capable PC.
2. Launch Continuum on Win phone/tab, or select Cast on cast-capable devices (phones/tabs)
3. Select target device. Click Connect. Done.
The screenie is on a Surface Pro 4.
You'll see all target devices in Continuum's "connect" screen.
My Nexus 6P doesn't support casting, which is a real bummer, especially for a 'premium' phone.
Paul Thurrott has the same problem with his Nexus:Yeah is the part that doesn't make sense. I've articles around the net with it working with Android, and you have a flagship.
I had to test this with my wife’s Android phone because Google has removed Miracast streaming from its Nexus devices (and possibly from Android N). That means your only option on incompatible devices is to use Chromecast for casting.
Can't cast from my tablet either, apparently the app tells you if you don't have compatible hardware. I'm getting no notification of anything going on if I try to connect.Paul Thurrott has the same problem with his Nexus:
You do realize the Chrome cast has to be plugged into a display right?#chromecast
That's old fashioned. This Connect app is for modern systems that have miracast built-in.#chromecast

It's a laptop...And your pc does not?
silly argument
It's a laptop...
I want to cast from my laptop to my tablet, and I think it goes more advanced than that by allowing you to extend the screen. Then TeamViewer on your phone is all you need.
It does indeed. You can extend the tablet display to the PC (not just mirror), so the tablet basically has an extended and enlarged workspace over two displays.I want to cast from my laptop to my tablet, and I think it goes more advanced than that by allowing you to extend the screen.
