Windows 10 perpetually slow on laptop

Yep, that's what Superfetch is for, guessing your most used apps and caching those.
 
If I was you? (without spending money)
uninstall EVERYTHING you don't need.
also,
right click "This PC", properties, advanced, performance,
select "adjust for best performance"
click OK OK Restart. (I think? I'm on Server right now and it looks a little different)

The interface will be less "flash" but it'll be more snappy/"less slow"

The Windows animations should be negligible overhead, so not really sure if needed.
 
Some computers are getting very slow. From the beginning after clean installation. It is always updating in the background, even when fully updated. No cure so far and forget about SSD, it doesn't help.
 
Thank you for all the suggestions gents!

I will try the following this weekend (and hopefully stop at 1):
  1. Disable superfetch;
  2. Check CPU usage;
  3. Uninstall store;
  4. More crapware if I can find;
  5. Up ram to 8gig;
  6. SSD.

YEah , RAM and an SSD. A family member has a Dell i3 laptop from 2009! and was about to toss it out the window because it was beyond painful to use. Upgraded RAM from 4GB to 8GB and installed a bog standard 250GB SSD (pretty much the cheapest on offer) and now the machine flies with Windows 10.
I'd recommended an SSD to replace the standard HDD. The difference in performance is substantial.

Thats really good news. My laptop is actually a ~ 2014 machine! Will definitely consider an SSD and Ram then - Black Friday :-)

1. What ver of win 10 ? Home or Pro? What version and build?
2. Are you sure you have allowed updates to complete? Make sure by checking the updates section.
3. First find out what is hogging CPU usage.
4. Clean up programs and apps you don't use.
5. Make sure you don't have things you want that require MS store before deleting this. Rather go through the apps first before just deleting ms store.
6. DONT sign on with an MS account, create a local account and only log on with the ms account when required.
7. Don't stay signed on in ms store. Only update the apps you want and use. Clear out what you don't use.
8. If using win 10 pro, get someone to help you customise the machine for best performance.

8. Then you can do all the other things already suggested.
 
Quick question: Samsung 860 Evo-Series 2.5" 250GB SSD (R1104 all in off Amazon) or WD green SSD 240gb (R700)?

For your *old* laptop save some money and use the latter.

You will probably want to replace the whole laptop in the not too distant future

Would I not notice any significant speed difference?

I use it for the odd game of Dota, and photo editing

Considering all the other slow bottlenecks on your laptop i.e. 4GB RAM and i3, the difference between a cheap and expensive SSD is minimal
 
Yeah the entry level SSD and a RAM upgrade will make a world of difference.
For General home use it will be more than sufficient and a a lot cheaper than buying a whole new machine.
Let us know the difference once you've installed the upgrades :)
