Windows 10 slow after clean install

So yesterday I did a clean install of Windows 10 (because of reasons...PC didn't sleep properly etc).
Anyway, I for one block MS IPs to stop my PC from phoning home - maybe keep this in mind. I installed Win10, it activated, I had it do updates (keeping in mind I blocked MS IPs after I updated), and proceeded with reinstalling my crap. So the issues I had before are gone, but I find the PC to be significantly more sluggish now than before - some programs suffering more than others. RAM usage is fine, and I have a 1 year old i7 processor so I doubt it's hardware related. Few things seem smooth (my animations and visual effects are on), and my typing lags at times. Good old Slack lags when scrolling, and the same can be said about Opera.

Any ideas as to why this can be?

Mods, please move this if it's in the wrong place, I see no windows discussion categories.

Which version of Windows 10? Pro or Home?

Did you get yourself a new ISO of the latest build and version number?

Windows 10 Pro version 1607 OS build 14393.693 or .726 is the latest. Some have not yet received the .726 build. This build is available for manual download (KB3216755 Windows 10 version 1607 build 14393.726).

Suspect we will all get this one today or tomorrow morning early. ( second Tuesday of the month is chaos day for Windows 10).

And it is not a good idea to "block MS IPs to stop my PC from phoning home" when busy with an update or a new install. Sure you can do it afterwards, but to do it when a new clean install is underway is fraught with danger.

Pro. Used the Media Creation tool and had it do it's thing with my USB stick.

And yes, I only blocked the IPs after it said I've installed all the updates :)

Hopefully those updates did not include device drivers from Windows update. Absolute nightmare

Unfortunately they do! Cause havoc with older equipment, especially printers. and especially HP printers. A clean install will replace drivers, which you have to most of the time sort out one by one afterwards.

You can't be serious! Now what, do another clean install? Can't I use driver booster or something to install drivers that are up to date?

The Clean update installs "the latest drivers" but these are not always compatible with some older kit ----

Then you have to fall back on finding what drivers the supplier of the kit advises to be used with Windows 10.

I have got that problem at the moment with a HP laserjet Pro CM1415fnw printer. The original software fails to install without reverting back to older drivers. But Win 10 keeps on replacing the older drivers with the new ones.

What happens when you press CTRL-ALT-Delete and pull up the resource monitor?
Does the CPU window show that the CPU or memory is being hogged?

Nope. Everything is sluggish regardless of resource usage... I would have a zillion chrome tabs open on the previous setup with more RAM being used and still not have this issue.

You should probably do an exorcism anyway! :p

no but seriously, I would just do a clean wipe and complete reinstall.

I agree. You may have to resort to another go. But then strongly suggest you wait until Thursday and then get yourself a new ISO. The talk is that the new update will be released later today or tomorrow morning. (To windows Update). Or, go to and get the correct updates yourself if you want to do the update sooner.

On Thursday the new ISO will have the updates on?
Should I give the updates a go now or am I wasting my time?

I have followed both paths and both take about the same amount of effort. The manual process is equivalent to the WU process as far as I am concerned.

I will be downloading a new ISO to replace the existing one I have later in the week, if it is available. In the meantime, I will wait the few hours for WU for the new update.

Just seen a post about a Security issue with the latest update. MS have decided to delay the release of the latest update to WU ....
So not going to happen today .....

Best then not to manually DL the update also.
