For those with activation issues, try opening a command prompt as admin, and running slmgr /ato
I have been battling activating some legit installs, and running this command activated it. It took two tries on the one machine.

@techead: did you us a Microsoft Account with your previous installation? If so, just click SKIP (near bottom left) when asked for the Win10 key. The system should activate after a few minutes.

No Microsoft account used. When that window popped up I did enter my serial number there perhaps that was a bad idea.

Should I do a fresh install of windows 10 and just skip that part altogether and not enter anything? (Like I would have usually done on a windows 8 install)

Will also try this!

I was thinking maybe I had to go do a windows 8 install now, do any upgrade and then go do a fresh install. Lao Microsoft knew it was legit or something???

Having downloaded the ISO and run the installation in my Windows 7 Home Pro I get an issue that the "Product key didn't work".
It is a genuine key on the Laptop and I verified it using "SLUI 3" under the Win 7 CMD interface and it activates successfully but then I use the Same key under the WIN 10 installation and it says "Product key didnt work"
....what tricks do I need to know to sort this out?

No joy. Tried to change the product key and it just gives me the same error.

What a complete fark up.

Should I go with a windows 8.1 install and just do the upgrade?

edit: What I am really asking is, Does Microsoft need to see the laptop upgraded from the original windows 8.1 FIRST??? and THEN it will only "unblock" the key for a fresh install or what??

Ran the clean install and have a generic key. Activation says that my key is blocked. Did the telephone activation and received a call from MS. They told me to wait between 24 to 48 hours and it should activate.

Yup, this worked for me.

Let me just warn those all excited, the upgrade process is slow: once the files are ready they first get configured, then copied, then installed, then configured again! Each stage has a percentage counter 0.0

Good news though is I got my upgrade last night by opening the upgrade icon at the bottom right and clicking on 'Show progress' for the download (before that it had just been stalled all day yesterday not doing anything after a small download in the morning).

Got mine last night, but now I have a serious problem, due to the fact that you can't disable the windows updates. The moment any sort of video driver begins to install from the windows updates my PC freeze. Run driver remover in safe mode then windows startup normally.
Any advice on what the problem might be.

That toolkit should stop automatic updates, not sure if it works on the released though.

Has anyone done the upgrade via ISO method?

I did. It's activated. I used the esd decrypt tool to make an iso out of install.esd (found in windows-bt/source). I chose upgrade option and it did the rest without issues.
