Windows 10 Technical Preview - Insider Program

Stability seems to have taken a few steps back for me as well, getting an annoying Intel Graphics Driver has stopped responding error every time my screen turns on, and startup seems ever so slightly slower these days..

At the moment I have Windows 7 Professional that I bought off-the shelf (ie. with CD and Licence key etc). If I were to upgrade to Windows 10 will they then give me a licence key that I can then use to reinstall Win 10 if I ever need to reformat or upgrade my PC, say with a new mobo, as my current situation allows? Or is it I upgrade and that's it, can't do anything else with regards to upgrades etc, the licence is only for that specific hardware combination?

Because Microsoft's blogs and press releases specifically mention "devices being upgraded to Windows 10" instead of actual license upgrades (ergo, no license keys sent to your inbox), you're only benefiting from the upgrade on a per-device basis, so you can't do a motherboard swap and have the same license re-activated on a new device.

I am currently running on Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit) on my main computer. After reading the article regarding upgrade details, it seems I will be upgraded to Windows 10 Home... I want to have Windows 10 Pro.

I currently have a Windows 8.1 Pro License Key which I have not used yet. Would it be worth upgrading my main laptop to Windows 8.1 Pro and then upgrading to Windows 10 Pro, when Windows 10 is released?

If you want all the features that the Pro license gives you, then its worth upgrading to Windows 8.1 Pro. If you don't need any of those feature specifically, then you won't really be benefiting that much from the move (and this also applies if you already have automatic updates turned on and don't pay much attention to what's actually being updated).

If you have a retail version of Win 7 will you get a retail licence of Win 10?

You're basically turning a retail license on the device being upgraded into an OEM/DSP one, so no.

I have this error after joining a domain, logging in and attempting to adjust settings etc.

When I rightclick on the desktop (e.g. and try to set standard destkop icons) I get the error-msg:

"ms-setting://personalization/" Deliberate translation of the associated text: "No programm is allocated to this file. Install a program or create a link in the control panel if a program is already installed"

My notebook came pre-installed with 8.1, I wonder if it will automatically be updated to 10 or will I need a product key?

Installed TP with no Internet connection using my login/password. Now shutdown button requires 3 clicks instead of two, like in the first version of XP. ;)
There is no Internet Explorer on the application list, very confusing!
IE showed up later after signing to MS account. And then another surprise, MS account took over my Windows login! I have shares on the LAN which I don't want to share with MS, so keeping my local Windows loging name is essential.

Right-click on the Win logo (start) and select Shutdown or sign out (2ns from bottom menu item) and then select shutdown. Couldn't be easier without making accidental shutdown a possibility.

I find the Start-right-click Quick Menu one of the most oft-used features in Win8/10. Love it.

These are important. Can someone explain what happened with my old login?

Just added:

- when positioning mouse cursor on the top of window, mouse cursor should change to the double arrow (for dragging). At times it doesn't work on the top of window. Still works on the sides and bottom. Crashing the top, as I use it most frequent (to extend window fully vertically).

- I wish that 3-phase window change when double clicking on the window bar (aka Win7) should be abandoned. Two-phase is the most convenient.

- Internet Explorer do not remember window size and position, the same dreadfull behaviour from Win7.

There is no Internet Explorer in the application list initially. I made another installation last night. It shows up later - perhaps after changing Internet options in Control Panel, not sure. Project Spartan icon calls a tablet grade explorer. It doesn't have usual 'About' page, so I can't tell you what it is. I can't drag address bar to create shortcut on desktop, [CTRL+F] for searching items on the page doesn't work. Double clicking on the URL invokes the same tablet explorer. It is like Microsoft trying to force us to use inferior products. :)

Thanks Arthur for pointing to the second button on the start button, I am using this frequently but everything is still not refined. This dual interface doesn't work for me at all. The Start menu "all programs" waste lot of space, it requires lot of scrolling and in general it is a bad idea, as basic built-in Windows application should be grouped by type (not alphabetically) in the tree view as it was before. Alphabetic list (if any) should be optional, not default. It would be the best if implemented as a quick search field for available apps. Apple iOS app search is an example how it works the best. It brings not only the app name, but other things too.

Two separate "Start" buttons (or one user configurable) would be a good compromise in my opinion. Will post later after getting more experience, but it doesn't look kosher.

Another installation - 32-bit version on the old tablet Fujitsu Stylistic ST5112, 2GB RAM).

Common problem on each installation: - it installs Microsoft Graphics Adapter. It can't work in native LCD resolution (Intel 945GM) on 1280x1024 external monitor. After an hour or so on the Internet it still doesn't pickup the right diver. Have to download chipset inf (just in case) and graphics driver manually.

This case problem: Installed Microsoft WiFi driver (Intel PRO 3945ABG) doesn't work. Will try Intel driver, but it is much older.

Trying now a challenging project. There is HP printer with JetDirect 610n series on the LAN. Till now I installed printer manually on Windows XP by setting up static IP on the printer and manually configuring TCP port, printer model, etc... Now, I thought that I could try automatic printer installation. JetDirect supports three different discovery methods and Windows at least two of them, it should work.

1. The first part is fine. Reseting Jetdirect to defaults, everything is right, printer properly auto configure from DHCP server.
2. Trying autodetecting printer... sorry.
3. Trying autotedecting by hinting, it is TCP/IP printer... sorry.
4. Trying to supply printer's host name, all right - progress, it creates TCP port, but still is unable to pickup printer name&driver. Interrupting, will be trying something else...
5. Enabling SNMP standard community password (never used it before, overheard it is unsecure). No detection a/a.
6. Repeating #4, it forces me to create another TCP port, it says the other one is in use. Stupid - I installed three different printer drivers for this printer (PostScript/PCL) in the past, all using the same port. OK, giving up, now on the printer selection dialog box I can't find Laserjet 4050 on the list of printers.
7. Trying Windows Update button - big mistake. Windows is unable just to download driver's headers, it downloads the entire printers package - nearly 200MB!!! Still no autodetection, but at least I can find my printer on the list. It deserves comment that Windows 10 is not ready for smartphones with metered Internet connection.
8. Everything fine till power cut comes. Windows after restoring power is unable to transfer jobs to the printer.
9. Reverting to the old-school static IP method.

There is a bug in Devices and Printers applet. It allows me second-button click on 'Properties', but nothing happens. I noticed new items on the address bar or below, I could use it to delete redundant TCP ports created in previous attempts.

I'll give 10130 a shot. 10074 was a disaster for me. Start menu didn't work, couldn't windows update without error and had to suspend and unsuspend the machine after restart otherwise the screen stays black.

it installs Microsoft Graphics Adapter.
As an aside, all my preview builds installed MS Graphics Adapter. But after updates the correct nVidia and Intel drivers were installed automagically - for my multi-display setup. Maybe give it a day or two to iron out the config?

Yeh, it was like that as well (with Core 2 Duo CPU, GM45 chipset), but updates consumed 400+MB. I think Microsoft should rewrite auto-update to accomodate portable smartphone/tablet market.

Downloading the 10158 build now, hopefully they have managed to sort the issues I've been having with the intel graphics driver, and a few other niggles with the start menu.

Also, I'm loving the Xbox One streaming, definitely a good addition to the MS Ecosystem.

Why not download 10159?

There are supposed to be many fixes in the new release.
