Windows 10 Technical Preview - Insider Program

Am I the only one that is underwhelmed by Windows 10 for PC. IMO it's a lot like 8.1
No, you are not. Dual - Control Panel vs. new Settings interface and naming is confusing. I never remember what 'System' item will bring to me, by example. To change resolution you must hit 'Advanced'. And Start menu is a joke. I never found it useful. Not to mention that attaching live icons cluster to the start menu is totally overhealming and hitting bad taste. Yip, it is pretty, but a bad taste, no balance.

For those of you interested in the results, or holding back on upgrading because you're not sure if it'll be different, I have a to-do article on my list to compare game performance between Windows 7, 8.1, and 10. I may also have time to do Vista if I download the service packs in the background.

Would that be of value to anyone in this thread? I'll be running the comparisons on a Core i7-4790 with a GTX 970 and Radeon R9 290. I have another article idea to compare gaming performance in Windows 10 against Ubuntu 15.4. Thoughts?

That is a great idea, would love to see gaming performance comparisons between windows 7, 8.1 and 10.

Which games would you use to compare Windows 10 and Ubuntu 15.04?

Any of the ones with scripted benchmarks that are cross-platform. The ones on the table so far are Civilisation Beyond Earth, Metro Last Light Redux, and Bioshock Infinite (all in my library). Out of those three, I think only Last Light and Infinite have graphable FPS results, Beyond Earth would probably return frame times. But I'll see what's up when I get to writing the results into a proper article.

Is it just me or is OpenGL not working in Windows 10? Even after the update this week with the new background and all I still cannot get any graphics when running OpenGL games like Xonotic or MOHAA in Windows 10. Under Windows 8.1 they work fin on the same hardware.

The Witcher benchmarks ?
Found it running faster on W10 but might be my imagination

Witcher 1, 2, and 3 don't have canned benchmarks as far as I know.

On AMD GPUs? That might be the case. WDDM 2.0 may be causing a conflict there and it might even be a repeat of the Windows 7 launch issues, where AMD's drivers borked OpenGL performance for about six months while they fixed it. If you roll back to one of the first betas for Windows 10, or even Catalyst Omega, it might work again.

No, I am using a S3 ChromotionHD 2.0 IGP. Loaded Windows 8.1 on it a few weeks ago and played Xonotic and MOHAA - worked fine. Now I loaded Windows 10 and the games open and you can hear the sound but there is no graphics.

Number of new Windows 10 drivers are available on Gigabyte download page for GA-B85M-HD3 mobo. I needed only INF drivers and Intel Management Engine to fix yellow marks. Graphics driver download was also required (as usual), MS driver didn't work on two monitors in extended desktop mode.
10162 works very smooth. Usual in 1030 built Explorer exception on reboot is not anymore. Now Explorer starts tidy, uncluttered too. Previously it looked like Oriental Plaza market. :)

Still having problem with safe removal of external hard drive (and MS-own Win10 bootable installation stick). It seems to be related to NTFS file system.

Busy now updating to 10162 on my old machines.

Thanks. There goes another 7 gig as two systems get 10240. Should be ready in the morning. 10166 was pretty clean, so fit 'n finish improving. Wonder if they're aiming for 10297 as "RTM".

I bet 10240 will be the final build.

Seems to be another MS inside joke. 10240 / 1024 = 10

Set one of the machines to download the updates from the other. The builds ARE distributed through Windows Update, after all.
