Hi there,

I am currently running windows 8.1 64bit, I am trying to upgrade to Windows 10.

Everything goes smooth until after checking my PC, then it gives the error message "error validating product key" what is causing this problem and how can I fix it?

So how did you originally install windows 8.1?
Is the product key for windows not stuck to the bottom of your laptop or somewhere on your desktop?

Yes my PC came installed with windows 8, but this doesn't help me because i don't even get to the place where i should enter a product key. The upgrade doesn't even start because it says it can't validate my product key.

Windows 8 key is stored in the BIOS. What happens with error, you are probably trying to install Pro version over Home or Single Language. Check upgrade matrix.

OK, now we need more details.

1. Do you try to upgrade by booting from bootable media with Windows 10, or booting Windows 8 from the hard drive and running setup.exe from ISO file? Only the later one is correct.

2. Your copy of Windows 10 should be 64-bit to perform upgrade.

1. I am trying the upgrade now with a ISO file.

2. Yes

*UPDATE*

Installing with a ISO file gave the same error message about the product key

I never did upgrade from windows 8.1 My PC's are older. It could be online validation (Internet connection required) and server is not responding. Try later, if nothing change, only Microsoft can solve this problem.

Follow these steps closely:

1. Validate your w7 SP1 (W8.1) online, best using IE.

2. Generate a genuine ticket of your installation by:

2.1 Copy gatherosstate.exe from your downloaded Windows 10 10240 ISO to your installation which should be upgraded.

2.2 Run it on your activated and validated Windows. It'll output GenuineTicket.xml. Save this on a USB thumb drive or something.

2.3 Then do a fresh install with your suitable w10 ISO, skip to enter key at setup procedure.

2.4 Once it's installed make sure your internet connection is DISABLED/do not enable the internet connection! Reboot w10.

2.5. Copy GenuineTicket.xml to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\ClipSVC\GenuineTicket\ of your w10 installation and reboot again.

2.6. Connect online, it should activate.

Is this a legal copy of windows 8.1? Did you buy the Windows separately or is it an OEM version? Are you online and are you accessing the internet via a proxy maybe? Did you by any chance use one of these activation tools?

Legal copy yes, OEM version and online normally.
