Windows 10 upgrade, update details announced

Bold move here by Microsoft but also not.. what they actually trying very hard to do, is force business/corporate, personal.. basically most of the user base on to Windows 10 by giving it away for a year. Why? Support costs saving and single base to work from and support for the future. I'm sure they ran the numbers and found that by doing this.. they will likely save longer term besides suddnely giving people access to their 'App Store' to push additional sales.. clever :p

Clearly it's a very different strategy from those adopted by the older gen CEOs of Microsoft..
 
This whole windows upgrade thing is confusing me.. Do I need to upgrade within a year to get lifetime free or upgrade and get a year free?

This seems to be the way to go, but I haven't been able to get it quite right. nVidia do have updated stock drivers for the video module, but they will not install because of Sony fiddling.
 
Will this not be an "auto upgrade", or do I have to go to MS Home page to upgrade?

I read it that you get a free upgrade if you do it within year. As W10 is NOT going to subscription-based from what I've read, then a "year free" wouldn't make sense. At least, that's my take on it.

I have an old-ish Samsung laptop currently on W7, might do the free upgrade to W10, and if I am happy with it, do it on my main systems as well. So if there are driver issues, am happy to look for modded drivers or dig around in INF files.

So I'm guessing downgrading from 10 to 7 will be impossible?
How is something free if you have to give it back? I think what they mean is you can borrow windows for a year, rather than have it free.

No, Windows 10 is free and yours to keep if you upgrade in the first year.

How in the hell are you going to prevent you from reinstalling Windows 7? Are people really this stupid?

Windows 7 start button with menu and booting straight to desktop. In all the time I've had Windows 8 I've only glanced at the Metro UI a handful of times - most by accident.

Windows 8 is better for gaming, boots up incredibly fast with an SSD and has a superior Windows Explorer, so it's a step up imo if you can just muster a smidgen of initiative and install a tiny third party piece of software.

This is not good enough for me. I expect Windows to work they way you customized it from the outset. I don't like to fiddle around with third party software tweaks. Hence, I decided to stick with Windows 7. I might give Windows 10 another try.
 
So i upgrade to windows 10 for free, after a year what happens if i dont like it and dont want to pay?

I think if your a current Win7 user you will be fine with win10. I played around with the technical preview on a virtual box and looks amazing!
 
Any of you know whether I can upgrade my Win8.1 to the technical preview and upgrade to the full version from there?

I think the technical preview expires in April but the consumer preview will be out soon so maybe use that as a stepping stone?

There's no 'fiddling around'. It's a quick installation that fixes the issues, and then you move on with your life. It took me no more than 10 minutes, and I've been running Windows 8 Pro for over two years now. That seems like a sensible investment of time. If customising Windows is unconscionable to you, perhaps you shouldn't be using Windows and should move on to OS X. Windows' greatest strength is its unlimited customisability.
 
tbf even just booting into metro only took one click to get to the desktop in win8

the whole metro argument is really rubbish. even worse when you consider 8.1.
