Windows 10 upgrade, update details announced

Interesting that it will be free to win7 users as well. Win7 is so rock solid compared to other iterations that it will take more than just a free offer to convince me to move

This is great news! Win10 tech preview build 9879 is awesome with few bugs but nothing that I cannot live with! :)

Just moved an old notebook back to W7 from W10.

I like W10 but had too many driver problems. You can blame Sony for that.

You have a year to go ahead, just wait a bit for Sony drivers to catch up. Should be less than a year.

Pretty epic opportunity for standardization which in term makes management a tad easier. Tests from our side on low spec'ed systems have shown promise, curious to see how it will do once they add some of the bloat ware shown tonight which I don't really have a need for.

No this notebook is a few years old, Sony are really bad with support on older stuff.

They typically don't do drivers for the next OS.

Its a Nokia lumia stretched to fill your pc screen. Windows 8.

Are you guys aware that Windows can be customised to your liking? I bought Windows 8 the day after it released. The Metro UI and missing start button were terrible discoveries, but a quick Google search put me onto Start8. I installed it and my problems were solved. Windows 7 start button with menu and booting straight to desktop. In all the time I've had Windows 8 I've only glanced at the Metro UI a handful of times - most by accident.

Windows 8 is better for gaming, boots up incredibly fast with an SSD and has a superior Windows Explorer, so it's a step up imo if you can just muster a smidgen of initiative and install a tiny third party piece of software.

Yes, but the problem is that Sony fiddles with the hardware, so that the standard manufacturer's drivers don't work.

ie for the video drivers, audio drivers, etc.

There are sites that provide modded signed drivers or if you're so inclined you can edit the INF files yourself and add the hardware ID for the laptop to the stock drivers as well

This, this, this and then some more of this!

Nor do most manufacturers in my experience.

Microsoft should carry some of the blame too because they keep making drivers incompatible with newer OS releases.
One can install the latest version of any Linux distro on old hardware and works 99% of the time without any intervention.
