reg file? is that safe?
yes ... right-click and select edit on the file ... that way you can see exactly what it will change in the registry.

this might be a better option? :

I see there's an auto-update option

EDIT : Always make a backup of your important files before running any scripts or reg files

There's an app that allows customisation of that way beyond what MS allows, I can't remember the name off hand, someone else hopefully will.
I use Rainmeter
I'm NOT Really into Windows 11. I Hope MSDN Considers allowing Their customers to customize the Taskbar &
Start Menu according to their liking. Otherwise i Won't be Upgrading to This! OS.

I gave this script a test. After you select your W11 version, you click on auto upgrade and from there on everything is automated. ... come back later to find yourself on the W11 desktop. Easy-Peasy

Rainmeter is just widgets it doesn't do much tweaking of the Windows gui?

No it doesn't alter anything in the Windows GUI.

I have my Taskbar on auto-hide. With my Rainmeter setup I don't really use it. I generally just use the start button when I look for an app not set up in my dashboard setup in Rainmeter. The apps I regularly use is on the app list on the left.

The skin I am using currently has more items I can add like a vertical app list and other functions which I don't need.

The nice thing about this skin is that it has a settings dashboard you can use to create the button links. Other skins might not have that so you need to manually set it up in the resources/configuration files. You can edit it in notepad.

In recent years I've found myself almost never using the start menu, especially not for opening things, got most of what I need pinned to the task bar, set to start automatically at startup or on the desktop.

Might be a result of putting myself through the torture that was Windows 8.
Ran an instance if it in a VM a while ago for nostalgia sake, quickly remembered why I hated it, although the 8.1 update did fix most of it.

I must say, my normal install of Windows 11 seems all normal in everyday use and in gaming

But I have a AtlasOS install with so much MS bloatware and nonsense removed and it much nippier, even a very noticeable difference in gaming on my old obsolete hardware. Want to move over to it permanently but agh, such a schlep re doing and configuring everything.
