Windows 11 update reportedly causing SSD failures, but Microsoft can't reproduce it

Microsoft says it is unable to reproduce a problem causing solid-state drive (SSD) crashes that was linked to a recent security update, despite mounting reports that the issue is more widespread than previously believed.

A video published by YouTube computer hardware channel JayzTwoCents on 30 August showed that a computer running benchmarks in F1 2024 would crash after losing contact with the SSD.
 
Sounds like a drive issue that shipped with a number of Windows PCs.
 
Lost two mechanical HDDs last week - can't explain why, though. Was doing a full recovery on a laptop with a failed (the infamous clicking sound) 500GB HDD and it trashed another perfectly good 500GB HDD (no strange sounds, appears perfectly normal). Windows 10, so it might be/not related?

I'm stumped, as I have never encountered this. Ever.

Had a brand new 4TB WD HDD fail within a day of installation last year, same thing, totally irrecoverable. Still have no idea why. Its replacement has worked fine since then.

Apparently not, HDD failures and other SSD using different controller. Very random, that's why it's difficult to reproduce.
 
I fought it out with this update just over a week ago. In the wee hours of the morning I noticed my PC become unresponsive. Very unusual. My CPU temps were spiking and there was 100% activity on the system SSD. After a little time, I thought my PC froze and restarted the machine. A few minutes after restarting the same behavior started again and I suspected it may be an update causing the problem because of the late hour. With my PC being barely responsive I checked Windows Update and there it was KB5063878 struggling to install. After a few attempts to simply install this KB I noticed it would download and then reach a random percentage while installing and then just hang for while and then eventually fail causing the system to seemingly hang in the process. I didn't find any relevant info on the problem at that time so I just paused updates until I could figure out what was happening. The next day reports started coming in about SSD failures related to KB5063878. My drive does not have a Phison controller.
