Windows 7 a Linux killer?

The only thing which will keep Win7 from crushing linux is its price tag.

That, and the fact that it is less customisable, less secure, slower (Linux can be very fast if you want it to; the latest Ubuntu running EXT4 boots in 22 sec); and suffers performance degradation due to a crappy registration system that means you have to reinstall Windows at least once a year, only be held suspect of pirating you own OS by Microsoft.

I think Linux might be around for a while longer.

xp is still the best.

I use XP - however, I still don't regard it as a good operating system. I think anyone who does, has pretty low standards.

As mentioned in another post, it is:
(1) Insecure
(2) Poorly designed due to its registry system.

22 seconds for linux to boot? geez i thought it would boot faster. Windows boots in 22 seconds, my xp pc in the office boots in under 20 seconds and vista in about 25 seconds.

Nothing will kill linux because mostly its people who hate microsoft that use it and that will never change, what windows 7 may do is stop new people from turning to linux because the general consensus will be that microsoft have released something great.

Did any previous version of Windows kill Linux? or even put a dent in it? Has any version of Windows ever killed the Mac OS? I'm sorry.... but it is a dumb question.

Linux will continue in its own way as it always has done... many people will continue to dual boot or install it on a spare computer.

Many people will continue to use Linux where they can't afford to buy multiple copies of Windows.

It's not going to kill anything... besides, while Windows 7 looks good... it is still early days. Who knows how much damage Vista has done to Microsoft's reputation.

A new laptop with win7 installed will probably not see linux installed by the average user. Sure the geeks and techs will always enjoy linux, i do too, but to think linux is not going to battle against win7 more so than vista would be wrong. Vista was so bad i tried changing to it about 6 times. Nearly every family member who owns a machine calls me for help, and in the last few years the problems have nearly always been vista related. In a vista enviroment, you can easy get them to change to ubuntu, but not now. Win7 is very good.

One good side effect of all this, is linux will be forced to improve on the user front, and the battle will rage on to the enjoyment of us all. The best thing for linux is for it to do battle against a good windows product.

Gary judging by the amount of downloads of windows 7 your comment seems about as stupid as you think think this question is.

The myBB article is a bit misleading.
Has anyone actually read the computerworld article?

Linux can boot in 15 secs or less, loading the interface(for ubuntu it's gnome) is what takes time. When I choose a light window manager like fluxbox boot time is instant after linux has loaded.

Just like the Romans weren't taken down in one go, so will Windows not be killed in one event. It will happen gradually which also means Microsoft can stop it as well.

If they continue on the Vista trend, yes then another OS will get bigger market share, if they learned from Vista and Windows 7 will be the next Windows XP, then they will continue with market dominance, if Windows 7 is another Vista well, then that is another step in the wrong direction for them.

Windows 7 is good.. but its not _that_ good. Its basically catching up to linux as a desktop. Those effects like peek have been in linux for ages.

... You are assuming that everyone who has just downloaded the Beta is going to rush out and buy a licensed copy of Win 7 as soon as it is released? ... and all those who stuck with XP are just going to give it up and rush to Windows 7 whether their hardware is ready or not? And all those Linux fans (like myself) who like to dual-boot are just going to say F-IT and delete their Linux partitions? And all those Apple Mac fanbois are going to finally see the light and sell their macs and buy Windows machines?

Uhm... Is Windows 7 free? No?

Guess I'll stick with my FREE Ubuntu still, thank you very much!

Windows is free :p

No gary but judging from amount of interest windows 7 has i am sure it will do fine and sales will be high. I actually loaded ubuntu the other day to see what all the hype is about but once i realized corel draw has 0 chance of working along with my entire cs4 package and i could not get a single one of games to run either. Booted up with vista and finished my work because cs4 and corel draw actually run :p, so i decided i would only run ubuntu again if all i wanted to do was surf the net and get emails.
