Windows 7 a Linux killer?

Soon no operating system will be more important than the next. Everything is moving to web based applications, so all you need will be a browser.

Not while we're saddled with the likes of Telkom and Neotel

I am a web dev, but I prefer my data where I can see it and control it, ie not on some server in the cloud, and I don't see any connection that I can trust to always be there (and always be reasonably-priced) yet.

Maybe one day, but not soon.

I have followed a simple rules when it comes to Windoze, "Only buy every second new relese" and for the past few years it serverd me well. I hung on to Win98SE till just before the release of Vista, I then went out and bought WinXP. By this yime XP was nicely tuned, and has served me well. Just like I gave WinME a miss, I will do the same with Vista. If Win7 is all it is reported to be, then that looks like the next one to get, but only just before the release of whatever comes next :)

Oi that is bad news, will have to change my policy me thinks.... hmm maybe start getting those Linux distro's lined up for when XP is dead and burried.

How do I post pictures again?

Bugger it...

Heres the link...

Windows 7 Beta 1: Took two days just to get the damn thing to install... then we couldn't get it to boot... it hangs when ever we try and run the built in bench mark... one good thing... it supports XP drivers!

ROFL

@ Kalvaer: well if Win7 is gonna be worse than Vista then the strategy is failing, so time for new one ;)

You must have read a different article to that which this thread refers.

My point is that Windows 7 vs Linux isn't much if you consider that Linux is open source. I will consider the 2 real rivals when M decide to release an open source operating system.

I'm not really convinced Windows 7 is any better than Linux or Vista. It's probably going to be resource intensive and require a few upgrades and a lot of headaches with drivers

No thanks

Win 7 is faster on my pc than Vista and dont have problems with drivers

Well excluding the NT line before XP :D I'm still running 2000 as my Server machine at work. Only time has ever been down or off is due to load shedding

Some disadvantages for Linux:

1) You need to be somewhat advanced on a PC
2) Troubleshooting any problems in Linux is ridiculously difficult (emphasize "ridiculously"!!!)
3) The sound setup is still a mess especially for 5.1/7.1
4) No Direct-X
5) It still misbehaves...you change nothing on your Linux Box and suddenly you have graphics issues and x-server doesn't work and f knows what else. I even had a case where suddenly I had no permissions or some k*k for all files after a normal boot up and the whole Linux Box was trashed. I can't begin to explain the mess I witnessed.

I like Linux but in all honesty it has actually been more of a pain to me than Vista!! *and all the fanboi's say oooooooooooooooooooh* :p but it's true. I spent most of my Linux days fixing shyte...in fact that is all my Linux experience ever was...just fixing stuff. And I even tried the latest Ubuntu...no improvement.

So IMO linux holds little water for end-users(not the server market). Not much of a threat against Windows just yet.

You mean like the odd-numbered Star Trek Movies?

(although Nemesis kinda blew that theory out of the water!)

/Me is looking forward to Star Trek movie ... and Windows 7 (at a good price) this year! ;)
