Not sure if anyone else has faced the problem where their old printer worked on XP but not on Windows 7/Vista, but I figured out a quick fix after reading that people claimed it won't work on them at all. (This was with my Lexmark Z35 which had no support higher than xp)

I let the printer install automatically but when it got on the driver installing part I then right clicked the printer I installed then went to Printer Properties.

I went to the tab Advanced and set the driver to Lexmark Z25-235 Colour Printer instead of the standard install option then added the new driver which was on the laptop since I downloaded it earlier (xp driver).

After that the printer worked but didn't want to start printing so figured out that I had to go to the cartridge manager to install the right cartridge to make it work properly, since the default one was wrong, now it prints perfectly :D.

For mono printers that don't have drivers for Vista, 7 or 8, I always installed them with the Generic drivers. Worked for a couple of HP and Lexmark printers and most dot matrix ones need to be installed using the generic drivers as well.

Will have to give this a shot with those HP LaserJet 1000 Models I have sitting around.

So this isnt a problem...its a solution?

was a problem I was fixing for a client so its a solution to it now :D

havent really worked with windows 7 much, usually use xp or vista at work.

@Gary hope it helps

@wesley interesting solution for when I come accross printers like that or ones which dont use usb cables.

never had any problems with vista business (wanted to get the free windows 7 packages but "they ran out of them" at the shop I bought my laptop from) and will get windows 7/8 when I upgrade my laptop.

I'm with Ichigo on this one, after service pack 1 and 4GB of RAM, Vista doesn't become a nuisance anymore, aside from the terrible booting times unless you're in the habit of putting the PC to sleep or hibernation. I know a handful of friends who still use it and it's fine for their needs.

Of course, it's ****ty compared to what Windows 7 brought to the table and Linux was much more user-friendly and faster. But Vista is good enough for most things, just like XP which is still good enough for gamers that don't play modern titles like Battlefield 3.
