I've been given a new laptop at work. It has a Windows 7 sticker on it but no disc or key sticker underneath. It's installed with XP but we're allowed to run any OS we choose.

Any advice how I can installed Win 7?

A windows 7 sticker means that it is windows 7 compatible.

If you want Win7, go and buy it. Do *not* install pirated software on a company owned laptop. Not only will you be fired if it is ever audited, but you'll be put on a blacklist.

:) not sure how you read pirating into my post but that's ok. Pirating is not the intention. There is no Win XP sticker either and we are, as mentioned, allowed to run any OS we choose. I need to run Windows because certain apps i need to use for work run only in IE (like Siebel for example).

It was just a friendly warning :)

Windows 7 sticker doesn't mean that your machine is bundled with it, just that it can run it fine and is supported.

You'll pay through your a## for it though, be warned.

If you really need it, motivate your boss/manager to buy you a licence - after all a work machine should not be your cost.

If the OEM sticker is Windows 7 then he ain't doing anything wrong, like he said he can run any OS he wants which should be Linux and Windows in a VM :D.

@Waaib, if it is an OEM license for Windows 7 underneath the laptop you can just get somebody to burn you a copy of the SKU(Version e.g. Proffessional) you have on the OEM sticker. But if it does show that it is Windows XP... You will have to buy a Windows 7 Home Premium DSP license and they aren't expensive IMO.

There is no WIN7 sticker underneath. Only on top the Win 7 logo.

Chatting to guys at the office also reckoned Linux with ubuntu VM is the way to go. The laptop is an Lenovo T410 - it has 8bg ram (dunno why) - what Linux to use?

Well, if it came factory pre-loaded with Win 7 (and someone took the COA-sticker off the bottom for some reason and put xp on), then it probably has a SLIC-enabled bios, which would mean that you can load the version of Win 7 it came with using an OEM SLP key. If it didn't come with win 7 pre-installed, then it probably doesn't have SLIC, in which case you would need to buy Win 7 or put Linux on.

You may borrow the correct Win7 disk as stated on the licence sticker under the laptop. Then use this to install Win7. The laptop probably had a recovery partition & as such the manufacturer decided not to supply a disk.

Don't copy the person's disk or licence key then you are not pirating. You have a liecence to run a certain type/level of software.

just pirate, not anyone's business but yours, and not my (or anyones) job to moralize you. I'm sure you are old enough to decide what you do.

oops, i guess i did not read right.

I'm posting from cell...

/makes a notes to read a lil slower & to read the entire post.

Yes then he will have to buy windows. Immaterial of his opinion on buying ms stuff. It is a work machine & must have original software.

His boss wont be happy if the company gets nailed for his piracy.

he does not need to pirate as he does have a legal licence for the software he wishes to run.

no he doesn't, otherwise it would tell him the key. either way, none of anyone's biz if he pirates or not, that's not the question. if he does, I am certainly not judging him. I don't judge people by their habit of getting their software, that's just too shallow for me.
