Hi, I'm pretty new to the forums, but I cannot find a solution to this problem...

This seems to be a common issue regarding Windows 7, with no known solution.

Windows 7 constantly drops the internet connection, whether it be wired lan or wireless network. The only way to restore the dropped connection is to log off and log back in, or to restart. This is NOT a hardware issue, I have a brand new clean install of window 7 home premium on my desktop with the same issue. There are no network problems, I can browse, share, windows even creates the network map with the correct topology, yet randomly I lose internet connectivity, download speed just fizzles down to 0 and thats it. Dead. Until I log off/ log in.

Network troublshooter comes up clean and says there's no problems. The network icon in the taskbar even still shows internet available. Yet nothing will even attempt to communicate with the outside world.

This problem is frustrating me to the point where I am about to take a sledghammer to both of them. And dont tell me about drivers, replacing routers, or network cables. This happens at home and the office, different routers, and no other computers or devices have an issue with connectivity when my internet goes down. Surely someone must have figured out the true cause of this problem by now? And why does microsoft seem oblivious to it?

Tough one.

Sounds like there's a service/app that's interfering.
do you lose connectivity in Internet Explorer only or in everything else too?
can you ping / tracert an external site when IE is not working?

Maybe disable anti-virus and check, then disable your firewall and check.
& check your firewall rules.

Try another laptop, once had a similar thing, I bought a new motherboard, suddenly no problem anymore.

Weird, had this happen to me for the first time two days ago. Unplugging the network cable and plugging it back in fixed it. It happened around 45 minutes after launching uTorrent, queuing up 12 files, seeding a further 8, maxing out my 6Mbit line. Normally I dial the pppoe connection with my pc, but was mucking around with other stuff so had my router dialup this time; assumed it was the router getting overwhelmed with the number concurrent connections or something. Dropped the pppoe connection on the router, redialed on the pc and it's been stable since.

If you're running torrents or something else that forces multiple connections (like a spam sending trojan), that's possibly the issue. Run netstat -a to see how many active connections you have. On my system I currently have about 45 / 160 going to non local addresses.

I'm running AVG Internet security 2011. I'll try pinging a site, but everything goes down, internet explorer, firefox, messenger. Thats all I use, I dont download torrents etc, and this does not appear to happen when I'm using my cell c dial up modem. If I remember correctly I did try turning off the firewall when it first happened.

I found a site where the guy was talking about the Computer Browser service falling over because of some issue when you have more than one computer on the network only one wants to be the "Master Browser". I checked this the last time it happened but the service was still running and I ran through the services but I didnt notice any obvious issues with any being stopped.

I'll try find the link to that site and post it here.

try downloading the network card driver from the manufacturer's website

I'm pretty sure it's not a driver issue.

I can ping and trace websites which probably explains why when you click "diagnose" it says there's nothing wrong, but no programs will communicate with the outside world.
The only way I can get things to work again is either by logging off and logging back into to windows or by restarting. Then it'll work for however long it feels like before falling on it's face again. When it dies my connection speed slowly falls to zero...and stays there. Sometimes it'll come back on it's own, but usually only for a few seconds to a minute before dying again.

I have this on both my laptop and my desktop, both running legit copies of Win 7 Home Premium 64bit. The laptop came pre-installed and on the desktop i bought and did a clean install.

This happens in different locations (home and work) and with different routers although it is the same internet line we use for both home and at our office. It also happens regardless of whether I'm connecting via wireless or with a LAN cable.

Laptop specs: Acer Aspire 5742
core i3 m370 2.4GHz
4GB ram
360GB hdd
Desktop Specs: 3.0GHz pentium dual core (E8400 i think?)
4GB ram
MSI P7N Sli Platinum Mainboard
2 MSI Geforce 8800GT OC graphics cards
500GB hdd (Windows & programs)
1000GB hdd (data)

To me, this sounds like a line issue - have you checked your ADSL line with Telkom, ask them to test it - I've had instances where the line was so noisy that it kept "stepping down" the line speed to the point of nothing...i.e. not synching properly at whichever speed. Eventually had the line replaced and all was well after that.

Check your routers log file and see what detail it gives.

Well, I would've suspected the line if everyone had a problem, this seems to only be related to Windows 7, we have 3 other computers running XP Pro, they have no problem at all. My desktop also had no problem before I started using Win 7, I had Vista Business that I ran for years. Even my cellphone uses the adsl via wifi, and when my computers go down, no one else has a problem, and neither does my phone.

It could well be the speed autosense of your laptop, try setting the line speed 10 100b/s duplex:

Open Network sharing centre, click on local area connection/properties/configure/scroll down to speed&duplex choose 100MB full

Try and uninstall any toolbars that you have enabled. Happened to me once that fixed my problem. Like Norton, AVG etc etc...

My first question would be what Antivirus app you using? Have you recently removed any Anti-virus apps? Like Norton for example.

To be 100% sure the problem is NOT hardware related, try booting a Linux LiveCD to test...

Sorry, I've been pretty busy, but I found something that may be part of the problem, or it may have just been coincidence... I run a little tool called Networx, it's a network traffic monitoring program, with some nice little features such as you can ping, trace, and monitor what connections are open etc. Last night I was having the usual issue with my computer refusing to use the internet, and I killed the program...and my internet came back immediately, and seemed quicker too.

So, I'm not sure if that could be causing a conflict, or possibly blocking traffic after a random period of time, maybe it's just not as friendly with Win 7 as they say it is...
But i'll try running without it and see how things go, although it's nice to see how much i've dented my cap at any given time.

Many thanks for all the responses from everyone though.

Strange....I've used Networx on my win 7 install for at least a year without issue. Then again i haven't had fixed line access in awhile.

I have also run Networx for a long time on Win7 and no issues - check the settings and make sure that the peak/off-peak times are set correctly, as well as the monitored interfaces. Otherwise uninstall and reinstall again.

Likewise with me with the Networx app. Maybe something got currupt. It happens

I found the problem, turns out it's a little bandwidth monitoring app that I use, called Networx, it's very nice with all the features it's got...except for the latest version killing internet connectivity. I was having the problem with internet dying on me, and I thought, "lemme kill this and see" and as I hit the exit button, my pages loaded, and quicker than before.
So, I thought, ok, maybe coincidence, so I left it and the next time internet died, I did the same thing, and *poof* internet came back.

I went to look on their website's forum and found the following which confirmed what I was having:
"Installed 5.1.7 in Windows 7 x64 today, love the program, everything I was looking for to replace DU meter. Only problem, and a bit of a deal breaker really, is that the program appears to interrupt internet traffic. Noticed web pages wouldn't load in both Firefox and iExplorer, and if I opened my bittorrent client after this none of the torrents would connect. All fine after restarting Networx but problem returns, especially after computer has been in sleep mode. Only been using for 1 day so not noticed any real pattern. "

Their reply was:
"This seems to be caused by a buggy network driver that version 5.1.7 carries on board.
We will be investigating this in the coming days, possibly reverting to the old driver or moving to another new one.
In the meantime, please use the previous release v5.1.6 "

Thanks to everyone for all the replies and help, I'm just glad to have this sorted :D
