Windows 7 is under attack, says report

Security company Webroot published a report that revealed a sharp increase in the number of infections on systems running Windows 7.

The mid-year update of the Webroot Threat Report showed that Windows 7 exploits had risen 71% from 2018. The number of IPs that host Windows exploits also rose by 75%.

There are people still using Windows 7?

From January 2020, no more security updates thus the number of exploits should increase quite a bit

This article comes across as a very thinly veiled attempt to induce people to move over to Win10. I am more than happy with Win7 and have no reason to move over anytime soon.

I have hardly any experience with buying Windows. Always had a company machine. I bought XP once and got W7 on a new laptop once. Since starting my own business, I use FOSS almost exclusively.
With that intro then: What does maintaining a standalone or small business requirements on Win involve currently? Apart from Windows, what else do you need to purchase? Office, anti-virus, firewall and what else?

You obviously have old hardware, as new PC hardware requires Windows 10 to run optimally.

Yep. I have to admit that my habits have changed over the years. From wanting the latest and greatest to a "if it works reasonably well, leave it alone" attitude. The same also applies to my cellphone - I have delayed getting an upgrade to my S7 until I find something truly awesome.

PS. Even when I do upgrade my PC, I probably will try to use Win7 first, before going the Win10 route.

Probably because of all the people using it. If you don't follow proper precautions you're equally vulnerable no matter which version you have. Most infections come through third party programs in any case.

Why would you do something stupid like that? You would have to go the Win 10 route.

Windows 7 only supports up to 6th Gen intel CPU's.

7,8 and 9th Gen CPU's and motherboards need Windows 10 to run.

AMD Ryzen CPU's also only support Windows 10. You don't really have a choice.

Only when buying new hardware will I decide which OS to get, won't be migrating to 10 now. (yes, there is a good reason I do not call it an upgrade ....)

Not true. The USB 3 on Ryzen runs through the processor rather than the chipset so you need to install an extra driver which MS refuses to bundle into a service pack. Apart from that zero other problems encountered in the last 2+ years.

When Windows 8 came out, I flip flopped a bit between that and Windows 7.

Windows 7 and 8 felt more or less equally fast on a mechanical HDD, but run both of those OSses on an SDD and you realize that there were great improvements made to Window 8 over Windows 7 already.
Windows 10 has been amazing for me thus far.

And that is why Linux is another viable option. Been using it for 8 months now. No more Windows for me. I can do all my work the same way when I was using Windows 7. I have got a few of my clients I do IT support for on Linux Mint and they love it. No hanging, crashing and updates leaving a machine bricked. And of course, no more FORCED updates. I will continue to get more of my clients switched to Linux instead of continuing using Windows 7 or going to Windows 10.

Meh! Say it isn't so.:p Hopefully, by the time I can afford a upgrade, Win10 Lite will be available, so it won't be so painful. Although, @Swa has given me some hope regarding the Win10 as essential story.

There is no native support. You have to go through hoops to get functionality on X4xx / x5xx Ryzen chipsets with Windows 7;

Trying to run a discontinued legacy OS on modern hardware is just dumb anyway. You'll take a performance hit and a potential security knock.

What do you call going through hoops? All it took was a driver either provided by the manufacturer or AMD themselves. This has been true for a lot of hardware since OSes existed. A lot of manufacturers will claim Win 10 support only but then when you install the drivers they work on 7 or there are generic ones.

The no native support is essentially the usual MS dirty tactics of choosing not to bundle available support into the OS.

Oh just admit it win7 sucks in many ways..... it just happens to suck less than win10 in many ways..... does not mean it's good. Linux also sucks in many ways..... I honestly don't know of any really good modern OS they all have their glaring flaws and no one seems to really care anymore, markets captured and status quo accepted.
