Hey guys. My my pc in suddenly running very slow. It one time took 3min to boot and everything was in the win95 theme. It also has these periods where nothing is responsive. Can this be a hardware malfunction or a virus or should I simply just reinstall Windows?

What anti-virus do you have running? Have you done a full scan (after updating your virus definitions)

Windows 7 rocks. Haters. Should everyone run Linux? Mac? Please.

Check performance monitor, show all users, and see if anything is misbehaving. Also, do you have a HDMI audio capable device? On alot of PCs disabling the "High Definition Audio Device" under System devices does wonders.

Just prefer Windows XP. Small, irritating things seem to go wrong in 7. Gadgets go missing, sound card issues - "Device can not start". It's nice when everything in an OS just works.
Actually intend trying Linux.

Go with Linux Mint, it's a polished Ubuntu.

If not a virus, I think you should also check your hard drive for problems. If any rebooting is involved you can also check that all the fans are working and have a look at the temperatures for cpu and graphics.

Damn... I recently downloaded Ubuntu. Need to get my old P4 up and running again so I can give Linux a go - bit nervous of slapping it onto my current server or desktop as I need them up and running continuously. Thanks for the tip though.

p.s. @ OP: Apologies for hi-jacking your thread.

have you checked the Reliability Monitor (start > type "reliability" > should show view reliability history)

Holy ****! Thanks repitah - there's something helluva useful I didn't know about.

If you have a anti virus, try running in safe mode and then scan..

Window 7 should be a problem.. it really is really good..

Check task manager and see your processes.

I know that there was once something call the "svChost.exe visrus" which tends to make your CPU ussage high and slow down everything, I don't know if that could happen.. but to check alt control del, process and see what is using it up ^ ^
