Can anyone point me in the direction of the checkout isle?

I'm looking for a Windows 7 license, cheap as possible please. The last license I bought for MS was when I bought XP in 2002, so I have no idea where to get this cheap.

I'm building a PC for a friend and he wants Windows on it, go figure...
:(

Good luck with that!!

Doubt if you can still purchase a Windows 7 licence legally from any shop.

I tried to purchase a Windows 7 Professional licence, and after searching my butt off, found it hidden away in the Microsoft US store. (Just change your system locale to US before you do it.)

And the price for Windows 7 Pro? R3000. :(

Microsoft is trying to force you to go to Windows 8, like I was forced to do. I've made peace with it.

Just noticed from this that Win7 64-bit Home Basic is limited to 8GB RAM. Rubbish Busturds. Don't know how I missed that before.

GRRRRRR!!!!

Home Basic = The crappiest Windows by far.

Does not even support pretty Aero.

OEM version is the cheapest. It's the same as the retail except doesn't technically come with support though nobody uses that anyway. It's meant for system builders so some will ask you to buy hardware with it but some don't. Unfortunately the basic version isn't available in 64-bit.

Wow people actually buy windows just wow ....

Yes, I do not steal software. If the trading programs my friend uses worked in Linux I would have gone that route.

I really do not want to support Win8, I just KNOW he is not going to get the hang of it.

Don't really care about Aero. Planned to put another 8GB in for running some more complex VM setups in Virtualbox. Just can't believe they would limit a 64 bit OS to 8GB (although I should know better by now.)

You will love Hyper-V in Windows 8 Pro.

Microsoft took it straight from Windows Server 2008 R2 and slapped it on Windows 8.

You can even swop virtual machines between Server 2008 R2 and Windows 8 Pro, no problemo.

Some nice features not available in VirtualBox + it creates the virtual hard disk in two seconds.

Can't be a full disk as that would depend on the speed of the HDD. Unless it's a partition on a disk. Virtualbox also has the option to create a partial disk and populate it as used.

15GB virtual disk in two seconds.

15GB virtual disk in two seconds.
15GB on encrypted drive (slower but only place I have space)
Virtually instant

That . is . just . wrong!!

$300!

I have a feeling my friend is either going to Linux or staying on XP...
Question is does he want to be completely legal and keep strictly to the licenses or just have a valid windows installation using a crippled product to its real potential. Latter can get for under R1000.

Can anyone comment on the versions? It's supposed to be 32-bit+64-bit but I see them being sold as either one or the other.

I cannot seem to find any info on this, is this only for OEM and only for Windows 8 Pro?

Think so. The other way that I know to get downgrade rights is to 'upgrade' your Windows version to Open/Volume licensing. Not sure if there is a minimum number that you need to by to do this.

It is probably cheaper and less hassle to bite the bullet and install 8.
