I am new to Windows 7, having just taken delivery of my new PC.
When I place a DVD in it's drive auto play does not work.
The only option given is to "open folder to view files" even though
"install or run program from your media" is selected in the auto play menu.
Any help would be appreciated.

In control panel you can find "autoplay". You can then en- or disable AutoPlay, or select what features you want.

Autoplay is disabled due to the conflicker virus that was running rampant in 2008/2009 in Windows, Windows 7 cannot play a DVD out of the box as it doesn't have codecs for it.

If it doesnt have a autoplay.ini then you wont get a Autoplay option under the right click menu of the DVD.

DVD's need codecs?

There is a catch, When reinstalling a PC/NB you can't play DVD's out of the box, but sometimes after Updates it just works. When I want to force it to play quickly without updates, you need to install this codec pack from MS, or install 3rd party DVD player, then it installs the codec and you can use the WMP or 3rd party one.

The DVD has autorun.inf. That's all.

The codec has todo with wmp version.

Do you have dvd software like Power DVD?

No. I do not have Power DVD. All I know is that it is a media player but fail to see how it
would correct this auto play problem.
