Iv'e been running Windows 7 for a couple of days now, i downloaded the leaked beta 7000 build ( the one that will be made public in a couple of days ).

As it is beta and based off of Vista i didnt expect much, kinda thought it would Hog memory and be buggy as hell, boy was i surprised. It is WAY faster than vista or atleast it is alot snappier.

Bugs :
So far the only bug i found was that if you disable UAC the gadgets on desktop dont work ( there is a fix for it on the net ). Other than that i havnt had any other problems.

Drivers :
Windows 7 installed all my drivers even ATI and bluetooth, however it did not detect my sound card ( Ac97 - alc662 ) or printer. The sound card driver i found easily on the net, however the printer driver i have yet to find, but since it is only a beta and not publicly availible yet i cant expect lexmark to have drivers ready.

I did a windows update and it updated 3 drivers to newer versions, one was my ATI HD4850.

Program Compatibility :
I was very surprised to find that all my programs with exception of one worked fine( and i have quite a list ), even nod32 installed and ran without any problems. The program that did not work however was daemon tools, which the developers said they would fix once windows 7 public beta is released. However, VirtualCloneDrive works flawlessly in mounting Dvd's and is just as good and even better than daemon tools in some aspects, for one it only shows the virtual drive when you mount a disc, when you unmount the whole drive dissapears, a feature i like very much, it also surpports all the images that daemon tools surpports. So from a compatibility point of view i am very happy.

Gaming :
I havnt tried many games as such, but dungeons and dragons online which i play daily works without any hassles. I have not seen any posts anywhere about games not running so i assume the general analyses is that whatever worked in vista works in windows 7.

General look and Feel :

Windows 7 does have the vista look and feel, but at the same time not, it is way prettier and also seems a little brighter, as if it is a much happier Os, they have changed so much that i had to scratch around a bit to find stuff ( and iv'e been using vista since beta ). Iv'e also noticed that they have simplified some stuff that annoyed me in vista, not going to go into great detail ....

Conclussion :
After vista i was not very optimistic about yet another release from microsoft, infact i was one of those guys dreading to see how microsoft would be screwing up my life over the next year.

So far i am very pleased with windows 7, after the initial setup i have to say that even in beta this OS is way more stable and faster than Vista. I am currently dual booting between Vista and Windows 7, but Im already contemplating removing vista and running this OS full time. I have yet to recieve a bluescreen which i am pretty sure i wont be seeying anytime soon.

Incase you wanna try this Os here are some Tips :

1. Use VirtualClonedrive to mount images, works like a charm, infact you may not go back to using daemon tools. link : http://www.slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html

2. Fix for gadets if you dont want to run UAC : http://www.mydigitallife.info/2008/...-to-not-notify-or-disabled-in-windows-7-beta/

3. Realtek high Definition Audio Drivers : http://www.9down.com/Realtek-High-Definition-Audio-Driver-2-13-54299/

on a final note :

This Os is fast, smooth, stable, looks and feels good. this Os is gonna kill both vista and Xp. No doubt about that.

I also couldnt get Daemon tools to run and another application that does not work in it is WinPCap (which I kinda use a lot :( )

DOTA and battelfield 2 run fine on it.

Window7 looks nice. I am aware that the Vista kernel is very good and have heard about Admins raving on with Server2008 base installs.

But as any Linux user will tell you, your Windows Manager can break your beautiful little box.

But it all sounds good, I like the resemblance to KDE4 though. Will most likely have it on my new PC I'm buying mid-year.

sorry, cant help you with winpcap. probly gonna have to wait for updated version. i see they released a new beta version, have you tried using that ?

I loaded this and thought, what a bunch of rubbish, its vista for goodness sake.

What have they changed exactly?

Better hope that's not the version that cuts off the start of mp3 files.

well it is no secret that it is built on the vista kernel and shares a similar theme, not the same, but similar and There is a BIG difference.

but this is more like what vista should have been, but mark my words, this is gonna be the XP killer. not even Xp was this polished in beta. i have never seen an Os with so little bugs in beta before, it is unheard of.

Better hope that's not the version that cuts off the start of mp3 files.

been playing tons of mp3's and not seen that bug, might be an earlier version bug ? this is build 7000, the same one that is going public soon.

Dude seriously its vista that looks slightly different.

Please tell me which bugs vista had and which ones this OS does not because to me this OS looked and felt exactly like my vista install. Seriously if they release windows 7 like this man o man i won't even bother :p

for starters this is way faster than vista. second it uses half the storage space. third the UI interface is way more polished and far easier and smoother on the eyes. Windows 7 also supports the new touch technology which vista doesnt.

here is also a website that list main differences : http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1206765/4_major_differences_between_windows.html

here is storage space comparison : http://www.ithinkdiff.com/difference-between-windows-7-and-vista-storage-space-usage/

windows 95, 98 and ME all shared a similar look and would you say they were the same Os ?

Dude, benchmark, do some tests and check resources, then post. dont just look at it and say " o it looks the same to me, its rubbish". that isnt very smart or constructive.

Hows the hard drive grinding now compared to Vista. I find that its fine on my desktop with the page file on a separate drive, but my laptop feels a bit sluggish on occasion.

I downloaded the leaked beta as well. I've just been holding off installing it, until I get my loan box back from a client.

@killadoob
Have you actually installed it? don't comment unless you've actually experienced it. Most of what Thriel said has been reflected on other reviews as well.

You havent noticed speed differences?

Nope seemed about the same as my vista, but then again i run vista on a q9550 at 3.7ghz 4 gig memory and a 128gb ssd,so i doubt speed could ever be my problem. I also loaded it on a 7200rpm drive for testing so i guess maybe coming from a ssd drive to a 7200rpm it would actually be slower than vista.

Yes sapp i have tested it, the latest build 7000, was messing around with it the other day. I never noticed a speed increase, it also looked worse than vista and to be honest i could not really tell the difference between windows 7 and vista.

When i said its rubbish i meant that compared to vista there is not really much difference. I will load it again tomorrow and try and see where this is so different to vista.

Well the bench press stats put W7 ahead of Vista and XP. Go figure. Windows 7 is everything Vista should have been. Its got a much better kernel and a lot less bloat. Its quick... and I was able to install without the need to chuck on any drivers.

vista runs fine until you start mutli tasking, i constantly have multiple items open including my ddo which i play in windowed mode and the sluggishness is very noticeable in vista.

i did the same with windows 7 and it is noticeably faster on my machine.

@killadoob, yes the UI frustrated me in the beginning as well, everything was changed around and i hate it when they do that with a new Os, but after using it a bit i actualy find that it makes sense the way it is now and the way vista had it now feels wrong.

I guess opinions will differ. to me speed, ease of use and space are main factors and the new windows has all three.

benchmark results :

http://lifehacker.com/5082336/windows-7-vista-and-xp-bootup-benchmarks-updated#c

it beats both vista and Xp, and remember it is still beta whereas both the other os's have had service pack releases, xp is on its third service pack, keep that in mind and then imagine where windows 7 will be when it has matured as much.

I will go check it out for longer than an hour this weekend and see but to me it felt exactly like i was running a different vista theme.

Well look space i don't think space is a huge problem these days considering your entry level hdd's are 160gb but the less space windows takes up the less crap it installs so smaller is better in that regard :p

Has anyone tried to run some games on it? Like serious games, Crysis or COD4 or something....

lol, it is not wares that i posted and i would rather download from that website than the SLOW ftp of realtek thank you ....

I have read all over the net that the games seem to be running fine, i myself have only installed dungeons and dragons online and it runs fine in Dx10 mode and Dx9. but i have yet to find a post where someone is moaning about games not working.

IsoBuster is pretty good but by the looks of things the free version requires you to extract the image before you can use the contents.
