Windows 7 trick

As far as I know sleep mode puts your PC/Laptop into a low power state with the RAM still powered, therefore retaining data. Hibernate however saves all the data from your RAM to your HDD then turning completely off, using no power. Have I got the bull by the udders here?

Hibernate still uses a small amount of power - it's strange - I know. In Windows power management they state the amount of time your notebook can hibernate for. It would be infinite if it were a simple power off.

Ok - I checked the Power settings in XP, I can't find that reference anymore. I did see it somewhere though - there is a time limit on Hibernation it seems - it's long but not infinite. It also appears the Wake-On-Lan function under Hibernate uses some power.

Peter what makes you think i am talking about a laptop?

My 2 pc's at home, not laptops pc's.

Ok, I didn't know. Re-format and reinstall. Get updated drivers and flash the BIOS. If it still fails sell the hardware and buy a nice Mac.

Win 7 runs a hybrid sleep/hibernate - it wll sleep for a while then hibernate.

Hibernate is a full power off state - the memory is saved to disk and reloaded upon power on.

Very weird - I've always used sleep on Win7 since RC1 - only time I ever shutdown is to change hardware and have never had any issues.

Yea it is odd greg lol, since the first time i got vista and windows 7 it works in the beginning then after a couple weeks it won't come back on :D.

Not serious though just annoying.

I would suspect a driver, probably one one that is not Win7 qualified - I get very intermittent shutdown crashes and hangs if I leave a Kodak Vista driver running when sutting down.

A workaround is easily implemented - I disable the device when not using it. The tool to use is devcon which is either already on your machine or downloadable from MS (can't remember :)).

Devcon is a really useful tool which allows scripted ensable/disable of devices.
