Windows 7 - Updates/tips/tricks/secrets/etc

It an other "generic" term for FREE

Mahala means free BTW

Oh, OK. Thanks. Learnt something for the last day of the year! I wiki'd it and that's not what I found. Apparently it's a Romanian slum as well. I guess after 20 years in this country I still haven't learnt the slang!;)

TuneUp let's you tweak Windows Vista to the max, it's got a very comprehensive Startup Manager and even suggests which programs are safe to disable at startup. Then there's the registry cleaner, registry defragmenter......hang on, just download it. It's free for 30 days. ;)

www.tune-up.com

*I'm using the paid edition of AVG, very different beast from the free edition. ;)

Why don't you just use Avast it's free and is much better than AVG
and With windows 7 you don't need to tweak anything to the max because everything is already running to the max. get the x64 edition and your pc will run like it has never done before

Don't waste money on these small software packages like avg and tuneup they become obsolete too fast and you will always find a free alternative somewhere else

Thanks, i started the win7 install about 25 minutes ago on my other desktop machine and its already restarted and preparing for first use. That is really fast!!

I never went for the ol format, i have another question for u guys since the replies has been so fast:D

Can i delete the windows old folder from my machine that has been created thru the install?
just run a disk cleanup on your c: drive and select old windows installations, then it will remove the old windows folder

Stupid Windows 7 trick: unlock the secret God Mode folder

http://www.downloadsquad.com/2010/01/03/stupid-windows-7-trick-unlock-the-secret-god-mode-folder/

So, what exactly is God Mode in Windows 7?

Well, for starters, it's not really a mode. And it's nothing you need to be a deity to pull off, either.

Rather, it's a folder packed with shortcuts to just about every settings change and administrative function in Windows 7. Everything you'll find in the Action Center, Backup and Restore, Autorun, Desktop Gadgets, Devices and Printers -- it's all there. All dumped in one central location for easy access.

No, this trick doesn't involve entering IDDQD in the run box - but it's just about that simple. Here's the magic, as provided by the guys at Windows 7 Themes:

* Create a new folder anywhere (I set mine up in d:\)
* Rename the folder and paste in the following text:

GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

That's it! You've now got your new, somewhat handy folder. Why somewhat handy? Well, because you can already access everything in there by typing a few letters into the search box on your start menu.

Still, it's a pretty long list of things to remember - so having a nice reference like this could actually be useful from time to time.

Go to Control Panel\Clock, Language, and Region, under Region and Language choose Change keyboards or other input methods.

Click on Change keyboards. Under the General tab you will have the option to select an input language. Choose US. If it doesn't show up click on add and add it to your options.

Hope this helps:)

I've had exactly that problem, which manifested itself in applications like Word or Thunderbird not accepting the space after closing single or double quotes, or typing accented characters instead of an opening single or double quote.

After a lot of trial and error I found the best combination to be selecting English (South Africa) as your Language, and US (NOT US International!) as your keyboard. Move this up the list, then Remove any others, and you should be in business.

This will not stop you using UK English in Word documents, for instance, though many users have had problems in Word specifying UK English as their default if the Language setting is left simply at English United States.

Windows 7 has lots of ‘GodModes’

Those intrigued by the “GodMode” in Windows 7 may be interested to know that there are many other similar shortcuts hidden within the operating system.

Intended for developers as a shortcut to various internal settings, such features have been around since Vista and even before, according to the head of Microsoft’s Windows division, who tells CNET that the so-called GodMode settings folder uncovered by bloggers is just one of many undocumented developer features included in Windows.

In an e-mail interview, Steven Sinofsky, Windows division president, said several similar undocumented features provide direct access to all kinds of settings, from choosing a location to managing power settings to identifying biometric sensors.

As with the all-encompassing GodMode uncovered by bloggers, these other settings can be accessed directly by creating a new folder with any name (GodMode or otherwise) and then including a certain text string. Sinofsky noted more than a dozen strings create particular settings folders, in addition to the overarching GodMode folder option.

Sinofsky and others say the term GodMode was coined by bloggers; it was not something the company used internally to refer to the settings folders. Although Microsoft maintains many such undocumented developer commands to access such settings, all are replicated by the operating system’s Control Panel settings.

Such undocumented means of accessing various settings have occurred in previous versions of Windows, and the GodMode identified by bloggers was also present in Windows Vista. Some users of the 64-bit version of Vista, however, say invoking the GodMode folder caused their machines to crash. Microsoft says it has yet to reproduce that problem, though several readers have said they have encountered problems.

It seems that the folks in Redmond have gotten a kick out of all the attention that the Godmode has gotten and have decided to have fun with it. Sinofsky sent a list of other commands that also create special folders (see list below).

Given the Vista issues, though, I would try these only on a Windows 7 machine, ideally a test machine. To make it work, create a new folder with any name, then a period, then one of the text strings below.

For example, the first one could be a folder named “thankscnet.{00C6D95F-329C-409a-81D7-C46C66EA7F33}” (use everything inside quotes–but not the quotes themselves).

Here’s the list of strings:

{00C6D95F-329C-409a-81D7-C46C66EA7F33}

Never done it. I always install clean. It is supposed to be possible but MS STRONGLY recommends that you do not do an upgrade. There is more chance of problems and system degradation.

Just back up your docs and stuff and then do a clean install, you won't regret it.
