Windows 7 vs Windows 8

Lol

Yeah, I know that, but it all seriousness, 8.1 is not ME or Vista

Metro apps are shyte, but if ignore them, the underlying os is great (unlike ME and Vista that looked good with horrible os level issues)

yes and installing a "skin" over win 8/8.1 is good, win 8 is cr@p and was always cr@p ,
just sad that pc's come with this garbage preinstalled and difficult to remove with "secure boot".

as A survivor with exactly this problem that messes up pc's

if you try load win 7 I have a big grudge with 8/8.1/8.2/8.999, until 9 comes around!

Ag no man

That's just irrational

Seriously after 8.1 I won't go back to Windows 7, there is a performance improvement also it's so much easier to search for your programs than open up the start menu.

windows 8.1 is sooooo much faster.

i have 8.1 at work and 7 at home, so i get to compare them every day. just install classicshell and ignore the metro (or whatever it's called) interface; boot to desktop

Don't do it. Windows 8 is worse than vista or millenium

Why? Be more specific, i have used win 8 briefly and its all changed...dont know where anything is anymore!!! that's the one gripe i have about it, not sure what else has changed?

Windows 8 machines only take 10-15 seconds to boot up

Compared to?

Article seems to have been written by the Microsoft Windows 8 promotional department.

I also ran Windows 8 for a few months and still went back to Windows 7. I personally did not notice this "huge" performance increase of which they speak  Maybe they should not compare their 5 year old Windows 7 installation to a fresh install of Windows 8? Also I would like to see how they watch a video and play with their wonderful "tiles" at the same time (unless they have 2 screens). Also how about comparing how much bandwidth Windows 8 uses keeping those tiles populated with news feeds compared to Windows 7. Better for 3D printers ... really ... hands up how many people have one of those?

Try 8.1 there's no point trying to compare 8 and 7 any more.
Also bandwidth? Really?
Also don't get your tiles reference...

Those stupid blocks on the "start" menu that Microsoft wants you to populate with all your
live news feeds. :D

Meh, I installed Start Button and the problem went away...

...then 2 months later I uninstalled Start Button and the problem is nit a problem anymore. I see that screen maybe twice a day.

I installed Windows 8.1 yesterday on my HP Microserver N40L, but haven't had much time to play.

But I just want to point out for the others that Windows 8.1 and the older BIOS on the HP don't play well together at all. It freezes during the install and after Googling, I saw the issue and needed to upgrade BIOS first. So I think the majority of N40L servers out there are going to freeze on installation as they're older BIOS

Anyhow - I think I'm now at the fastest I can go to run XBMC on what I have ;) I added Windows 8.1 which the majority say are better on slower machines and added an SSD.
