I don't want to get too much into the specifics of each - but I've had Windows 7 for years and happy.

Someone has given me a copy of Windows 8 and thinking of using it. I know when they launched 8, many preferred 7 - but has that changed?

Don't listen to these hypocrites, if it is Windows 8.1 do it. :p

Isn't 8.1 an update to 8 - no payment or anything?
So I need to go 7 > 8 > 8.1 ?

Truth be told,it's much ado about nothing

Personal experience my old desktops run much faster on 8.1
I however did disable the Tiled start in favor of Windows 7's start menu (classicshell.net)

Ignore the doom and gloomers - win 8.1 is fast, stable and will breathe new life into even 3 year old hardware.

It's no ME or Vista

Not an easy choice, I see :/

I thought I'd have all 'no' ala Windows Vista or all 'yes' ala Windows 7

I run win 7 & win 8.1, both PC's have SSD's. I see no difference in any performance. Thus why I never bothered to upgrade my desktop, which is my gaming PC.

If my PC had complete failure of some sort, and I had to reload because of said failure, then I would put 8 on. But to re-install all my software & games just to say I have windows 8 now ... hell no.

Wouldn't install 8 even if my life depended on it.

I actually disagree. Was in the same boat until I actually took the plunge. Startup is sub-15 seconds, it updated to 8.1 within a day, games load faster and play better. I would highly recommend it.

On a none SSD machine the difference is remarkable.

My old win 7 laptop got a new lease on life when I put 8.1 on it. 'Twas remarkable

And yes, it's apples and apples - the win7 was a clean install that I used for a few days before hosing and installing 8.1
