Good day How can I prevent Windows 7 from turning automatic updates on .I believed from Microsoft web site that Windows does override your settings if they think best.

My problem is that I cannot afford it ,and I do have the antivirus to protect my self. And as every body know , with the update there is also a help file if the update is not working .We all know nothing is the same after a update

I was just thinking maybe the network service providers gets a cut from the operators for all the updates.

Most of Windows and Iphone updates is more than 1Gig. And when you phone Vodacom about data lost, there replies is always Have a look at your updates ,but according to law Vodacom does not have to give you a print out about data usage. They wil just say you have used it.

Enjoy the week end

I believe you can set that in Control Panel -> Windows Updates.
There you can choose when to install, what to install and whether to auto update, etc?

Welcome to the club. It is the last Windoze version you can control yourself. This is assuming that Windows Update is disabled immediately after fresh W7 SP1 installation.

Remember that some built-in applications like the latest IE have a separate autoupdate settings. and Defender will autoupdate even you have third-party antivirus. You can fight it, but with latest Microssoft offerings you are losing battle, Windows takes ownership of your computer. Also if you update any Microsoft application like Skype, you are facing a new challenge anytime new version is out.

The latest version of Adobe Reader (DC) also updates automatically whenever it wants ; there used to be an option under Updater to control if & when you want updates, on versions 10 & 11. There's a way to still install these older versions, I found out this last week, if anyone needs to know :)

On the Win 7 / 8.1 upgrade front, I've posted this in another thread ; don't know how many here in SA know about it ; not needed to use it myself, yet :

You can still control updates in Win 8.1 ; 'specially bought an 8.1 backup laptop recently so I could switch the updates off (ie. to never check for them), and do them manually when my Vox Bolt-on kicks in after 6pm weekdays, or on the weekends.

Even if you turn Windows Update off in Control Panel it is still running. Go to

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services

Scroll down to Windows Update. Rick click on properties disable it.

I have tried everything .One day when you shut your win 7 computer down you get a message ,don't turn off windows is updating .Then you can turn it off in control panel again and one day Windows will turn it back on .I once Google it and Windows statement was that it is there decision to turn it back on if they think it is a security risk.
