Everytime I log in, I get a message saying that Skydrive isn't available right now, then there's a cancel button at the bottom, which I have to click. Then it says "We're setting up things" and I have to wait a few minutes. This happens every single time I log in. When I eventually log in, the Start and Apps screens are blank. I then have to sign out and back in again before everything returns to normal. If someone could please help me, because this is driving me insane. I really love 8.1 and want to get it working properly.

If you're not actually using it, Skydrive can be completely disabled - that's what I did with mine - I prefer Dropbox anyway.

In case you want to go this route.

Cloud storage services are constantly vying for attention, and the inclusion of SkyDrive in Windows 8.1 is indicative of the importance Microsoft places on it. But not everyone is so enamored with the service and would rather that it wasn’t so hard-baked into the OS. Using Group Policy Editor or the Registry Editor, it can be disabled.
It is slightly strange — and annoying — to find that there is no easy, built-in way to disable SkyDrive integration. This means that right from the word go you will see a SkyDrive folder in Explorer with no obvious way to remove it.

Completely Disable SkyDrive EverywhereIf you want to get rid of SkyDrive entirely, you can use Group Policy to remove it. This will get rid of it from everywhere on the system though, including the Metro apps.
Launch Group Policy Editor by pressing the Windows key and R simultaneously, typing gpedit.msc and hitting Enter.
Beneath the Local Computer Policy section, navigate to Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\SkyDrive and then double click the entry labeled Prevent the usage of SkyDrive for file storage to the right.

Select Enabled and then click OK.

The change will take immediate effect and you’ll see that the SkyDrive icon disappears from Explorer straight away.
Remove from the Explorer Side PanelIf you just want to remove SkyDrive from the side panel, you can use the registry editor to remove the library that provides that feature.
Press the Windows key and R at the same type, type regedit and press Enter. You then need to navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\ {8E74D236-7F35-4720-B138-1FED0B85EA75}\ShellFolder.

Before you can proceed, you will have to take ownership of this registry key, and when this is done you can make the necessary changes.
Double click the Attribute key and change its value to 0.

Should you ever feel the need to reverse the changes and reinstate SkyDrive, you can do so by either disabling the setting in Group Policy Editor, or editing the registry key again, this time changing its value back to the default of f080004d.

Thanks, I'll take a look when I get home. I did play around with the group policy editor and the Skydrive options but can't remember what I set the values to be. I just hope it will be fixed, because it's really annoying.

I already had those Skydrive options disabled in gpedit.msc. I don't know how to get rid of that annoying screen :-/

Just be carful security and dropbox don't got well together.

Dropbox is about as secure as Skydrive, its good enough. I wouldn't worry . If you are serious about security and encryption and all that I would go with SpiderOak.

Hmm, I thought you had some personal experience you could share with us.

There is an inherent problem with all cloud based storage services including dropbox - dropbox is hardly unique in this respect.

I password protect / zip encrypt my sensitive stuff before storing in the cloud in any event.

As for the rest, it's more of a convenience.

For the enterprise I would not recommend any public cloud storage service.

Okay, I tried something and it seemed to work. Go to command prompt, cd to Windows\system32, then type restoreoptin.exe /RAMP

This seems to have solved the issue :) 8.1 is absolutely fantastic and fast. I really cannot believe it. On the sports app, I just typed in Manchester United and it immediately added them to the app, pulled their stats from the EPL through (fixtures, results, match summaries and stats) incl the EPL log. Now I can always just see their latest results etc. Extraordinary. Revolutionary. Amazing. Extralutionarymazing.
