Windows 8.1 Update 1

the 8.1 update, while bringing some welcome updates, did fix some annoying problems, like the fan almost running full time, heating up the laptop, reducing battery. So thanx for that! (used to need to kill one of the svchost.exe's running to reduce the fan a bit)
but now... Onedrive has been put as part of user profile. I installed it originally on C:
as AD user, we are limited on user profile space, so now, keep getting complaint "Warning! You've exceed profile space"
and i cant move it... the suggestions are to right click on onedrive, go to properties, location and move to another location.
this wouldve been the solution, but in my case there is not frigin move button... it just shows the location (C:\users\name\onedrive), no option to move it :(
any suggestions will be welcome. (i looked in Onedrive, options... no luck.... even making ALL files "available online only" doesnt solve the profile space issue.)

I just moved the folder to another location. Cut/paste. :-/ Still works.

naa, gives me the finger. no go
maybe coz i'm not admin on laptop. will try make myself admin (add to admin group) and try again.

The update never loaded my side - had to download and install manually.

imagine if a nearly 900meg file gets auto downloaded, and fails at 99%, then redownloads...., and again, again.... (and you're on 3G)

rather manual DL

Mine wasn't close to 900MB. And you can always set Windows Update to notify but not to auto download.

Windows 8.1 Update Cannot Be Installed, Returns Error Code 80073712

As compared to Windows 8.1, the new Windows 8.1 Update is being delivered through Windows Update in order to avoid any potential downloading and installation issues, but it seems that plenty of users are actually stuck with some weird error codes that do not say anything about what went wrong.

As we reported to you yesterday, a number of users are provided with error code 80070020 when trying to install Windows 8.1 Update, but today it has emerged that another message pops up when attempting to deploy the new OS version.

This time, users are provided with a message saying, “Couldn’t complete the updates. Undoing changes” and then with error code 80073712 which, again, doesn’t provide any other specifics on how users can actually fix the issues.

Here’s what one of the affected users posted on Microsoft’s Community forums today:

“The installation of KB2919355 proceeds quickly to 74%, becomes dead slow until 89% complete, and finally aborts without any specific error message, just stating ‘Couldn't complete the updates. Undoing Changes’. Wasted the whole day yesterday trying again and again, utilizing everything mentioned in the previous posts. I have 8.1 installed on a 240 GB SSD with 50 GB available free space, data are on a separate drive.”

Many other users have already confirmed similar problems, so it’s very unlikely for this to be just an isolated issue affecting a small number of computers.

At this point, there are several workarounds available, but none actually seems to be solving the problems, even though a number of users claim they have managed to install Windows 8.1 Update after performing a system refresh or reset.

Windows 8.1 Update fails to install for numerous users, generates complaints and frustration

Microsoft rolled out Windows 8.1 Update on April 8th, promising to bring numerous new improvements to non-touch users.

Unfortunately, not everyone was able to snag the update and install it successfully. Users are apparently receiving errors 80070020, 80073712, 0x80071a91, and 0x800f081f, creating frustration and causing complaints.

"I've tried both installing from windows update and downloading the update package from MSDN and KB2919355 (Win 8.1 Update) fails to install in both cases. All of the related updates work fine or are already installed but this one gets nowhere after numerous attempts," one user states on Microsoft's official support forum. "Words cannot describe my frustration," another user states.

Apparently, users are experiencing an error preventing the installation of Windows 8.1 Update, which weighs in over 700MB in size. Sometimes the update reaches 99% and ends up reverting and requiring a restart.

Microsoft, thus far, as rolled out one solution. If your installation fails with error code 0x80071a91 while attempting to install update 2919355 via Windows Update, head over here for the solution - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2939087/en-us

I've installed it last night when I downloaded about a gig's worth of updates. I'm impressed, Windows 8.1 runs a lot faster than Windows 7 did on my Asus EEE netbook. I just can't use apps because of the maximum resolution of 1024x600 :o

I'm surprised so many have had issues in updating to the Win8.1, Update 1
Mine went smoothly with no issues at all.
And I am no expert in matters "PC".
My ou toppie, now in his 90s, living in the UK, also did the latest update, and all went well for him. The only difference was that he could download the update in a lot less time that the time it took me on my Telkom 4Mbps line (he has a 16Mbps BT Internet connection)

Downloaded it manually from Microsoft and installed it on our four Windows machines without any problems. Only post-installation steps required were setting it to boot to the Start Screen and removing the Store icon from the Taskbar.

No issues this side - took a while to do the shut-down and restart after installing (about 15 minutes for both), however all good after that.

For those of you that have had issues installing Update 1, have you got the following file installed before proceeding with the update?

KB2919442

The file is a prerequisite for the windows 88.1 update to run.

A weird thing now happens. My netbook does not recognize external drives I attach after coming out of sleep mode. I have to restart, then it works
