Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Is this better or worse than Unity on Ubuntu? :D

Never seen it or tried it but you mentioning cell phones made me think about Unity.

LOL! I couldn't stand Unity either. This is fuglier.

This Metro interface is for gimmicks and gadgets - not serious desktops that work hard for a living.

I would say Even if I dispize both, if I only had a choice between Unity and Metro, I would pick Unity.

The thing that really annoys me about Microsoft is their attitude. They are going to foist this on us whether we like it or not. Now why, for the love of Jesus, can't they ask some simple questions on install like "Would you prefer the old type interface or our fugly new one?", and "If you don't like our shambolic ribbons, check here to have normal menus". But nooooooooooooooo! You're gonna love this whether you like it or not!

also, why do my twitter contacts appear twice while i can't see any twitter updates?

Like its mentioned before, this is a preview and not a final product. Also if you follow up at http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/ you will see that they very much take people's input.

For example go read http://blogs.msdn.com/b/b8/archive/2011/10/11/reflecting-on-your-comments-on-the-start-screen.aspx

So I will not call it a lost case yet.

Resistance is futile... prepare to be assimilated...

one thing i just thought. if win8 for business is consumer with no metro from an interface pov, it stands to reason that we will "all" run that version (pirated).

Why pirated?

my impression from reading this form over the years is that i don't expect the majority of people here to be running legitimate copies of any version of windows. and i don't care that they don't if that's the case.

edit - are you getting twiiter and facebook updates on your people app?

I have another theory.

I suspect that Enterprise edition will need a Windows 8 Server to activate against unlike home and pro that will activate against Microsoft servers on the web. Or that is the Idea I got some time back. There where talks of this activation happening every 2 months on a enterprise PC in order to prevent people to take Corporate editions and install it on their home PC's

(Posting from cellphone so terse)

Paul Thurrott has a useful consideration on Metro v Desktop in a column here.

I'm pretty confident that the plan all along is to have Desktop for business/power/legacy users, and Metro for handheld touch devices. MSFT doesn't expect us to give up Desktop for "Fisher-Price" Office and productivity apps, but it knows Desktop won't cut it on tablets. There are millions and millions like me who mostly live in a power desktop and who also want a no-compromise tablet for easy browsing, etc but also want the tablet to drop back into serious apps when required. Having a single OS that does both, with all the x-platform compatibility, services (such as comms, multimedia and manageability) - and above all common apps - is the best of all worlds.

Exactly, all it requires is to be able to switch off Metro.

BTW, I use SBS003 and Win8 joins the AD quite happily, so apart from the user interface, there would appear to little to worry about on that score.

I actually am enjoying the Metro interface. The only problem/suggestion I would have is to put the shutdown button on the start screen.

Or you could try out http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/ (Still in testing but I think this will the best option)

If you want to use metro as a start menu, basically if you seek you will find solutions. The problem is we should not have to try and get things to work the way we want em to with 3rd party add-ons. Microsoft should give us options to do so. They can use current set-up as default, all I want is a tick/switch in the controle panel to give me the other option.

For those that are intrested, the above mentioned Star8 application is now open for all to download.

Hop on over to http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/ to get your copy.
