Windows 8 Consumer Preview

So I love Win 8 so much it is now my main OS. no more windows 7 partition. And as a previous user stated, I keep finding myself moving the mouse into the corners of my Win 7 work PC.

I have a problem that closely match yours.

Thanx to Gnome 3 I am use to moving my mouse to the top left to get my "tasks" but I keep on moving my mouse away from the corner the moment it pop's up and in Windows 8 this cause it to close again. That normally gets followed by some swearword word in my mind....

LOL

I think Metro is simply a learning curve. The start screen (menu) can be as close or as far away from a traditional start menu as you want it.

I tend to think of my start screen as an app drawer instead of a start menu. Plus the type to search on Metro is flippen cool.

Is there a way to reduce the time it takes for the charm bar to display once you hover over it?

Thanks. But is there no way to do this via the GUI?

Sorry, my bad... I'm not sure hey...

Perhaps play around with -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop -> MenuShowDelay value data in regedit ?

See if it makes any difference...

That was the objective of that video... to bring up the teletubbies-coloured rectangles.

It is a start menu... once you have your items pinned to it... it functions the same way... a launching pad for the software.

It really is a non-issue.

I didn't look at the video - better things to do than watch web videos.

No - not a start menu. On your normal desktop most of the desktop remains visible when you click the start button. This thing - ooops! desktop gone! Train of thought broken. An extra level of abstraction that is not needed. Just like modern versions of Office - want to save or print, document obscured, inconsistently shaped buttons all over the place, wtf was I doing? Views coming and going, no consistency, no continuity. I'd rather just see more on the same screen in an organized way. It is a major issue because it is a major error of human interface design, going contrary to conventions built up over years, and way less efficient. For pretty boys, not work.

Well... maybe you should have watched this one before going off about my response to the comments about that video... ?

Strange to comment on a comment about a video that you refuse to watch...

I am appalled by how lazy people are just to learn something new. The desktop is not gone it's just running as an application. The start button as you know it is gone but there are applications that restores the same functionality. FFS Windows8 is a new era, adapt to it or stay behind.

If you read my post I was not commenting on the video, but on your comments that the start menu is still there - as also claimed by some supposed influential guru on some website the location of which I can't find at this moment. Oooh! Press the windows key and you have your start menu! Not.

Al the solutions and answers is already discussed in this thread. Just read up some.

The point is not novelty, but efficiency. I am dismayed at the directions MS moves in - many supposed efficiency features just aren't - they create extra abstractions and steps that aren't necessary, and slow one down. And that is in spite of the supposed ergonomics experts they seem to have used. Win7 itself is much harder to work with than XP if you are dealing with lots of folders and files accessed frequently - in fact the Win7 file manager is an abortion.

If you are just a gadget-kiddie and want to see where you are on the face of the planet ( lord knows why - maybe after awkening after a motherless binge ), or stuffing around on things like Twitter, then fine, I can see the utility. But not for serious work.

Uhm... okay.

See... a menu, called start... start menu... same difference.

T... But not for serious work.

The new OS is just that more efficient for serious work, highly customizable to suit. Maybe you should just wait till someone else have done all the work then you can just copy and paste. Each to his own.

I don't see no desktop behind all the little rectangles.

Oh... like it matters... ??

xpStartMenu02.gif

It launches applications... it is not a desktop window frame.

Why just not launch every possible application you might use at login, minimise them all, then you negate having to use a menu at all that will obscure your desktop wallpaper... just click on the taskbar on the application you need to use.

Check he rest of the display more to the w'right. You will still not find the start bar on the desktop you have to run another application for a start bar.
