Hi

I've been doing some research and can't seem to find a solid answer anywhere. I'm thinking of purchasing Windows 8 DSP from wootware.co.za, but I'm not sure what DSP means. Most articles I came across explains it as a version similar to an OEM version which can only be installed on one machine.

1) So if I change my hardware would I need to purchase another copy of Windows 8? If so, what if I add another hard drive to my system, does that then also count as a hardware change?

2) Can I do a clean install with the DSP or would I need to have windows installed or can I do both?

Yes, generally DPS can only be installed on one PC. Once the PC goes, the OS goes along - it can't be used anywhere.

Rather wait for the full OEM version to be released.

I see there are some online retailers already selling the full retail OEM (64-bit) at only $149 (R1200).

Thanks DarkSpectre. Are we assuming the Windows 8 DSP licensing is the same as Windows 7?

@House - I can also do the upgrade at $39.99 :P That's actually ideal for me since I upgraded my PC about 2 months ago and won't be upgrading again soon. I might just be getting a new HD

I would shy away from that assumption. Far away.

...at least until I've had the chance to compare the different licenses with each other face 2 face.

DSP is pretty much the same as the old OEM licensing.
MS has not really used the term OEM for a while now.

It isn't. The Windows 8 license allows for hardware changes if the software was bought for personal use. It replaces the full retail version.

Here are the terms:
Can I transfer the software to another computer or user? You may transfer the software to another computer that belongs to you. You may also transfer the software (together with the license) to a computer owned by someone else if a) you are the first licensed user of the software and b) the new user agrees to the terms of this agreement. To make that transfer, you must transfer the original media, the certificate of authenticity, the product key and the proof of purchase directly to that other person, without retaining any copies of the software. You may use the backup copy we allow you to make or the media that the software came on to transfer the software. Anytime you transfer the software to a new computer, you must remove the software from the prior computer. You may not transfer the software to share licenses between computers. You may transfer Get Genuine Windows software, Pro Pack or Media Center Pack software only together with the licensed computer.

You can read the whole license here.

- What exactly does this mean? Does it mean you can simply pop in a new motherboard and do a new, clean installation with your System Builder version or is there a special way of removing Windows first when swopping hardware?
