Windows 8 extremely slow copying from external drive.

I have never installed manufacturer drivers for any of my external storage devices, seems a bit outdated if the OS needs this, I think the last time this was a requirement was on Windows 98.
 
Ok I've tried all suggestions, still slow. I notice now that once the speed drops wateva I copy after that max at 512kb/s no matter from which device I have to restart and then the cycle starts again:o

For the mainboard not devices, usually fixes glitches. Fixed my SSD glitch on windows 7 after a clean install.
 
Sorry guys but I got it completely wrong, I done some tests last nite it appears it only goes slow when I copy to the Hdd hosting the OS. I have 3 hdd's, I tried from USB, CD and both the other internal drives.

TeraCopy is flawed in that it fragments files as it copies them. I recommend using the software KillCopy instead.

I've been using TC for years- this is the first I've heard of this. I've not noticed fragmentation being an issue. Got any sauce? I'll have a quick Google too...

Fragmentation is a legacy issue, not as important today as it was back then, computers are fast enough today and SSDs do to need defragmentation. The performance degradation is minmal compared to the old days where things clunked along and every little bit of optimizing helped.

Fair enough- I see the fragmentation issue was fixed in 2008 anyway (from TC dev changelog). Pros>Cons in this case, I think...
