Windows 8 gets Start button

Microsoft is bringing back the Windows “start” button, one of a slew of improvements aimed at winning over tablet users and placating PC customers

Geez, they will need to do a lot more than just that, but it is a start...

I used XP for ten years. Win 7 will be fine for the next 10.

If memory serves me correct you quite enjoyed Win8 a while ago, providing a lot of info.

:wtf: no wasn't me. I used it for two days in total to test our software, that's it, promise.

Bingo! I'll stick with 7 until MS releases a proper desktop OS with with no hint of fondleslab retardation. I'll have Aero back too, thanks. They can keep that boring flat look and primary colour aesthetic.

I think they have missed the best way to implement Metro and keep traditional users happy. The tiles should be like widgets on a normal desktop, but snapped to a grid. The start button should be kept there and should open up a start menu like normal, just one with a Metro feel laid over it. That way users get the best of both worlds. I will try make a mock up to explain what I mean.

I played with it for over a week! it takes twice as long to get to something in win 8 as apposed to win 7...

Start button and menu should remain, I will ditch win 8 and wait till Microsoft bring something usable to the table....

I like Windows 8 and love the metro interface. But I decided to pay for one of those products that places the start button back on the desktop and startups in desktop view.

I don't use Win8 as my primary OS and thats why I don't like to start up in metro mode. Its a personal choice.

I love Win 8, but I DESPISE Office 2013. Went back to 2010 after a few days, and won't be tempted back until the eye-blinding theme is improved.

Opposite for me - I like Office 2013, but despise Windows 8.

Windows 8.1 also includes a vastly improved “search” function, which allows a user to search for documents, apps, or items...
Score. I bitched about the retarded split search endlessly.

...on the Internet from a single search bar
Wait what? I want to search for apps, docs & settings locally from one spot. Fingers crossed that this is just the reporter messing it up.

Its very nice, but they screwed over those that use shortcut keys in Excel heavily. The special paste shortcuts for example sometimes just don't work (e.g. alt-e-s-v and alt-e-s-t). There is also a new bug in it ("clipboard is in use" on copy) & some other clipboard related bullsht error. The print window is nice though & the ribbon customization is decent too (plus helps with working out shortcuts).

Lack of a start menu was a deal breaker for me with Windows 8, so I only installed windows 8 after I found that there are applications that can put it back for you.
