So; an hour ago; I was upgrading from Win7 Ult to Win 8 Pro.

I had a Windows.Old folder that I had when I reinstalled Windows 7. When I chose to upgrade and keep files and settings it proceeded; after everything's finished now I have 100GB space free (WTF) (from 15GB free). 75GB of data from my Windows.Old gone!

Win8 is an F.Up!

Bad mistake bro, never upgrade windows. Reload it fresh.

Surely you backed up the partition before you loaded a new OS?

What data is missing, surely you don't use your c:\ or windows drive to store your data, was it apps and games?

S'funny. Are you using Win8 RTM?

My upgrades from Win7, mostly Pro but also two Ult, were all flawless.

You already had a windows.old folder, and you had live data in it? Seriously?

+1. Win 7 Ultimate to Win 8 Pro.
Only issue I had were the Gigabyte drivers for my mobo (AppleCharger.sys to be specific).
After removing and rebooting I have not had a single issue.

It's probably not a good idea to upgrade a windows installation twice, considering they appear to all use the same backup folder.

I didn't have time to alter; I reinstalled 7 then almost immediately to 8 Pro; the copy was from TPB (hides. )Nothing serious, I can get it again, some movies documentaries from YouTube.

You keep downloads on your c:\ drive?

Get a different hard drive, that way if you ever need to load windows you do not have to worry about data.

Why would Windows 8 be expected to guess that there was something in Windows.old that you wanted to keep? More than likely a double upgrade to Windows 7 would have done the same.

I'd go for a clean install - no issues whatsoever.
I go for upgrades. No issues.

You idiot. If you're installing the 64-bit version of course your data would be gone - it requires at least 20GB free off the bat! The installer makes a shadow copy of all the OS files as well as copies of your program files before deleting the original versions and restarting for the initial setup, so if you constrain the amount of space available then it will delete the Windows.old folder to make space because it assumes you've already backed up all your data.
